How do you take advantage of +1 valor bonus of provences for dismounted troops?
Some provinces have +1 valor bonus to troops like Chivaric Foot Knight (Ile de France) but how do I build foot knights in the first place?

Hi hotingzilla ~
To get foot knights you have to dismount knights before battle. So to get the valor bonus build knights and dismount before battle. I'm not sure if you build knights in a knight bonus province and retrain in a foot knight bonus province whether this bonus is doubled or whether you just have +1 valour bonus for on foot and on horseback. Hope I haven't confused you?

In vanillia Total War it is not possible to train any foot knight unit. Like Yakobu says you have to train them as normal cavalry knights and then dismount them in battle, although some units, like Feudal Knights, can only be dismounted in sieges.

You can mod the game to make Foot Knights buildable as opposed to only available by dismounting before battle or the occasional appearance in a stack of rebels after a rebellion.
Back up your crusaders_unit_prod11.txt, then input the following values (including the double quotes & curly brackets) into the building requirements field for the appropriate unit:
Feudal Foot Knights: "{ ARMOURER2, ROYAL_COURT2 }"
Chivalric Foot Knights: "{ ARMOURER3, ROYAL_COURT3 }"
Gothic Foot Knights: "{ ARMOURER4, ROYAL_COURT4 }"
In each case it's the building requirements for the mounted knight without the need for the Horse Builder. You could also add Swordsmith2 to Feudal, Spearmaker3 to Chivalric & Swordsmith4 to Gothic to keep the build requirements high due to the strength of the units compared with other infantry.

So if I build Chivalric Knights in Ile de France, and if I dismount them in a battle, I get the valor bonus?

Interesting, except, I have never even bothered to figure out how to dismount them, so how do I dismount them? :knight:

During the deployment phrase of the battle, you can right click a mounted troop and select dismount.
Re: How do you take advantage of +1 valor bonus of provences for dismounted troops?
I'm pretty sure that valor is preserved so I think that v0 CKs dismount into v0 CFKs etc.
therefore, I think that without modding, if you dismount a CK form Ile de France and another from Toulouse, the Toulouse CFK will be higher valor.

I may be way off here, but can't you get foot knights when you declare a crusade? I mean, build your chapter house in Isle de France - chances are your crusade will start out with a unit or two of foot knights.

I think they are order foot soldiers, you may get chiv foot knights but i've only ever gotten hospitaller ones...
Re: How do you take advantage of +1 valor bonus of provences for dismounted troops?
the 100 men dudes are order foot and are buffed chivalric sarges (spear)
foot knights are 40 men and are polearms.
they are awesome and are among the best infantry avalialable.
I've seen them most in christian rebellions or papal reemergences.

Ah, that's it - order foot. Sorry - I'm still not familiar with all the units. I have used those order foot, though - and I liked them a lot. Extremely tough - fight and fight, very hard to kill.
Re: How do you take advantage of +1 valor bonus of provences for dismounted troops?
that's quite all right. MTW is a very deep game.
order foot are awesome in early. all crusader troops are extra tough and usually chivalric level (with exception of fanatics).
they also have the advantage of costing very little upkeep compared to other units.
crusader knights cost only 50 florins to maintain compared with 105 for feudals! they are thus cheaper in the long term and also better fighters due to being chivalric knight equals.
