Man, if anything could go wrong for us at the Olympics, it has. First we throw away an easy double play ball in the bottom of the eighth against the Cubans (we went from a one run lead to being down by three before I stopped watching), then our star women's hurdler (favored to win gold) trips over the first hurdle and goes down. All of this took place in the space of ten minutes.
My stomach hurts...

Obex, I believe the problem was TEAM play. The rest of the world is catching up in basketball, there are some fine international players and teams outside the US now. Basketball is a team game, a bunch of "hotdogs" can and will get beat by team players. The USA team got what it deserved.

Ya, but did you see that Quebec chick get the gold in the 1500 meter wheelchair race? Good stuff! (Seriously, I saw it about two nights ago, I had no idea it was a sport. But really, how different is it from cycling?)
Our guy in the men's wheelchair race got knocked over and nearly broke his head. Bummer.
Are the wheelchair races in the Olympics proper now? If so, good, cos I never liked the idea of having a separate "special" olympics.

I believe wheelchair races are a demonstration sport this year. Here's a question: If wheelchair races are now a "regular" Olympic event, will (or should) they allow non-paraplegics to take part in it if they wish?Quote:

But I think not. Having a fully abled person putting themselves in a wheelchair to win a medal just seems insulting, if not insultingly self-centered.
Also, there are lifestyle factors that make training for a wheelchair athlete much more difficult than for an able bodied athlete. I just don't think it would be fair.
Well in that case in the interests of fairness they should make men and women compete in the same events and not have separate races for each of the sexes. I don't understand why that is still allowed. After all, so much of the world these days is about enforcing equality that things like the Olympics fly in the face of it all. It is almost like admiting that there are actually differences between men and women...
