In addition to the artillery, infantry, and cavalry, some Roman armies had canine units as well. Dogs of all types were regularly employed for guard duty and hunting throughout the empire, as well as for entertainment by battling gladiators in Roman cities. Roman war dogs, however, were a different breed entirely. Huge and vicious, these animals were a breed unto themselves, known as Mollosians. Physically similar but even larger than today’s Rottweilers and originally from Greece, Mollosians were unleashed during combat in packs to literally rip opposing enemy infantry to shreds; it was supposedly not unheard of for the largest Mollosians to take down lions and elephants.
