Time travel
Suppose you could live in any part of the world, at any time in the past. You CAN take enough gold back with you to be able to live well, (assuming you choose to go to a time with a developed economy so there are things to buy) but you CAN'T take any modern technology. Finally lets assume you will be given a completely effective crash course in the local language and culture, and a cover story enabling you to integrate into local society (so, no need to rule out ancient egypt just because you can't speak egyptian)
Where and when would you go?
I think I'd choose Athens in about 480 BC (taking my chances with the Persians there) or maybe England in shakespeares time.

Re: Time travel
Me? I'd rather not go into the past - things can only get better after all... I'd rather head into the future. Nonetheless - if I were to pick a time and place in history, I'd want to head back to Rome, near the end of the Republic, or thereabouts. Of course, I'd want to be accepted as a member of one of the patrician families of Rome...
Whilst I was there, I'd see what I can remember of modern technology... and persuade the establishment to give all the wives (and potential wives) of carpenters in Judea compulsory hysterectomies.

Re: Time travel
I would love to have been at Malta 1565, as the Ottomans had gained a foothold in the main fort at Malta. Although wounded Grandmaster De Valette personally lead the counterattack with pike in hand and the hospitillars managed to drive the turks from there position.
Also from a safe place obviously, the carnage the longbows caused at crecy and then seeing the poor hapless genoese crossmen being run down by there own cavalry then to see those cavalry getting there arse handed to them by the dismounted english foot knights :charge:

Re: Time travel
the Attack of the Imperial Guard at Waterloo (in fact the whole battle), I'd loved to have seen the redcoats beat Napoleon's unbeatables back. True British (and Irish) Grit.

Re: Time travel
I'd like to go to Russia in 1917 and follow the developments of the revolution.

Re: Time travel
I would choose to be teleported to the Aztec capital around the time that Mr. Cortés arrived there with his Spanish mini army. I really would want to see what they saw at that moment.
