Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
1. OK – so the boiling oil was a complete – and unwelcome - surprise!
2. …and finding the gates open to a city with stone walls is not always a good thing, not when you forgo building siege equipment – and get jammed up at the gate – see #1 above!
3. Streets that run along walls KILL – it is possible to lose a sizable chunk of your army before you even get to the center of a town.
4. So the number indicator on the Mercenary screen is for UNITS – not number of troops available (I used to wonder why 1 and 2 man units were following me around - duh).
5. How the hell did I miss that port for the city of Syracuse – when playing as the Greek Cites faction?? My faction heir and some valuable troops are dead now for no good reason.
6. If you send a spy into a city – and he ends up dead – sending another one will only mean he ends up dead! You need to send an Assassin.
I’m sure I will have other “accomplishments” to look back on in the near future.
Barkhorn.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
My best 'durr':
Playing Julii, I started a war by invading two of Gaul's provinces simultaneously with two 600 man armies. Both had tough fights, but took their objective cities with about 400-450 men left each. The next turn a large (900+) man Gaul army turned up outside the westernmost of the two cities and beseiged it. My eastern army left two Hastati units behind to keep order in their newly taken city and went to aid the other army. The next turn, the eastern city revolted and an 800 man Gaul army materialized inside it. I had to turn my relief force around and next turn had two battles where I was outnumbered 2 to 1.
I made a mental note not to gamble on a 70% happiness rating ever again.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
1. Don't put small reinforcement armies in enemy territory with thier back to ocean so they have no escape :(
-
Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
Don't try to negotiate for military access when one of your allies is beating the heck out of the faction you're trying to get military access to. :inquisitive:

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
1. Attack a British army mainly comprimising of warbands and infantry, on a map that was COMPLETLEY covered in forest, with an army mainly of cavalry.
2. Attacking an army with a small unit without a general while my main army with the general acts as reinfocements, under AI control, and gets slaughtered. *sigh*.
3. Sallying forth from a town and having 4 units of routing skirmishers trying to get in the gate with 8 units of infantry trying to get OUT the gate. The enemy had a lot of archers too.

Oh the memories... note to self... if stone gatehouse equals boiling oil.
Do not get in a rush trying to beat the clock, assault immediately because your spy opened the gates, and decide to throw your general in with the rest of the troops.
Their was alot of boiling oil stored in there.
Lost a good general on that one along with a third of my army.

Hehehe! Yes, been there, except my general was trying to charge out of the gate and flattened some of the routing velites while getting peppered by enemy archers ~:joker: What a disaster.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
My favorite: letting that annoying but excellent Greek diplomat in Sicily bribe my best army and heir on the 3rd or 4th turn. I kept playing though.
In another campaign I watched the same joker bribe my Carthaginian garrison.
He's hell on assassins too... Spies and other diplomats keep him in check.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
Probably my biggest mistake was trying besiege cities with an all cavlary army (Parthians). Then another army comes in, and I have to fight two hoplite heavy armies at once. Weee! :wall:

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
Autocalcing a battle. It's just a bad idea on "very hard." I autocalced a battle with my half stack army against a single archer unit. Result? The archer unit killed almost all of my elephants (brought along to bash down the gate so that I don't have to wait a turn to build siege gear.) My cav heavy army took as many losses as the archer unit, which lost only 40% of its men and lived on to be a pain in the butt. No more autocalc for me. I might be stupid, but I'm not crazy.

She mentions you wont have any control over your what units are lost and could easily lose your general, so obviously the same applies to elephants as well.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
WELL, DUH!!! Nobody expects their high end units to get slaughtered by a small band of pansy archers, when you have better units to engage with. And nobody in their right mind would expect the same pansy foot units outnumbered 10:1 to escape cav in the open desert.

Sure you wouldnt expect it, but from her warnings you shouldnt be surprized by it.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
Yep, some of have used autocalc before. I quit using it in MTW/VI because it was too easy on things like sieges. Anyway, thought I would try it on some really easy stuff to see if it was worth saving a bit of time in time waster battles. It isn't.
It definitely shows that you are a newbie. Perhaps if you had experience with STW, MI, MTW, then VI you would have a little more respect for the veterans.

Respect is something you earn - it is not a right, and just because you've played MTW for a longer period of time than I does not mean I have to 'respect' you in any way or form.
Also because I have only recently aquired the game [MTW] recently hardly qualifies me as a newbie, how the hell does this "show I am a newbie?". How is that related to this topic, AT ALL?
How did you ever get to be an assistant moderator with an attitude like this?
Your bickering with me is just spamming the forum with annoying trash that other members have to sift through.
I made a light hearted commented to you trying to "make the peace" and you've gone and turned it into a flame war.
-
Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
I never used autocalc because it was already doing retarded results back then. From your post, though, it seems RTW's autocalc is much worse. I won't bother trying it though. I only tried MTW's to test the siege bug but I still got better results doing it on my own. Reason, I let the expendable units bash down the gates so I get more casualties but they're worse units.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
Morindin,
When you've already ticked someone off, making fun of them is hardly an acceptable light hearted comment to "make peace."
I was asked to be an assistant mod because I was providing a fair bit of tech help to others in the forums, and I enjoy that. I did not ask for it.
You've posted a fair bit of stuff that was absurd, claimed MTW was crap, and that if folks don't think RTW is perfect as is, then they should go back to MTW. Then it comes out you are new to the series. You have a huge credibility gap.

I have never claimed MTW was crap. I have given nothing but praise to MTW, but I have made a point of pointing out all the absurdly unrealistic things about MTW in an attempt to calm down the ridiculous hysteria in this forum about RTW realism.
The amount of anger expressed by some people here over RTW who don't even have the game yet IS pretty ridiculous to a new comer like myself. These people need to calm down, otherwise CA will probably give up on so called "vets" due to being way to high maintaince and demanding, not to mention not being very appreciative.
How about giving THEM some respect huh ? They have made a truely great series of games - some of you act as if its all because of you.

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
I think you need to pull your head in there Red Harvest. I don't see anything in Morindins comments that warranted your reaction and from your post about autocalc I would have guessed that you were the n00b since autocalc has always been a lottery. You did seem to lose out pretty badly in that instance though.
Both of you just take a deep breath, agree to disagree and leave it at that please. Don't get personal, it's pointless.
-
Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
After seeing the preposterous things he has said to many vets, he will get no quarter from me. It has been said that I don't suffer idiots very well. I make no apologies for it.
-
Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
What he has said to "vets" in the past or why you feel "vets" should get any kind of special treatment is irrelevant. Personal attacks have no place here and his comments in this thread didn't warrant or deserve your reaction. As a fellow user of these forums, I don't want to have to read that kind of pointless crap. If you don't like him, ignore him.

He took a poke at me. I might have ignored it if he didn't have history. He's got history so I didn't and I won't. If he hadn't taken the poke, I wouldn't have responded. Sorry you don't like it. I don't like it either, but you are misdirecting your fire.

Ditto !
Leave it be, you two, or do it on a pm basis ! It's childish.
As to autoclalc. I was actually wondering how worked in RTW. Seeing that in STW and MTW you sometimes got rediculous results. Has anyone else tried it and got acceptable results ? Or do you also suffer casualties that dont' make too much sense ?
Quid

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
While I've only done auto calc 20 times or so I've seen a bit of both, strange defeats and acceptable victories. Most of the time it's been the result that I would think it would be but still some strange ones.

The Greeks seem to like bribing armies don't they? I usually have the same thing happen to me. Even when I was playing as the parthians I had some annoying Greek diplomat running around bribing all my armies. Does anyone know what actually happens to a bribed army? Usually you dont keep it, it says it goes back to the field, so does that mean the population gets dispersed back into the cities or it just dissappears?
Autocalc for me usually means my elephants get heavy casualties (often 50%+) and most other elite troops suffer high causalties too. Lower level troops don't seem to suffer such large casualties, where there is a mix of elite and low level troops in an army. Dont have an all lower level army though, you will lose every time (yes I'm speaking from experience ~:mecry: ) Autocalc gives much worse results now than in MTW

Re: Stupid Stuff I’ve Done…so far
@Red Harvest
And you are calling yourself an assistant moderator?
It's been a long time and a different forum since I've seen the word "newbie" combined with the word "vet". That you are calling yourself a vet because you've played MTW is ridiculous. That you use caps lock to tell him you know all is clearly childish. That you attack him on his (apparently wrong) assumption you don't know what he ment, AND that you attack him on his (apparent) newbieism is below low. I know not why the newbies in the org get a moderatorship?
