Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering

I see the anti aliasing in RTW under the options (though I can only seem to choose "low"). Does anyone else with a spiffier machine see a 'medium' or 'high'? (I assume low correspondes to 2x?)

I would think what they would want is the anisotropic filtering, but I see no settings for that inside RTW.

Does this mean if I want anisotropic I have to manually change the global settings on my video card?

Also, could I possibly override the 'low' limit for AA in RTW by changing the global settings on video card and not letting the application control the settings?

Firstly, I don't see any jaggies in the default settings, so I haven't noticed the lack of anti-aliasing options.

Yes, you can set global anti-aliasing with your video card. I had to do something similar with refresh rates because my moniter has a weird refresh rate and I got headache inducing vertical breaking in games.

Global settings do override, I run R:TW with x4 AA and x8 AS.

Ive always wondered about this. Is it best to set Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering from my CP or let the applications choose, and is 4/8 the usual/best settings for a 9800 pro? :jester:

The best setting is the best your graphics card/system can run.
Personally i would rather use a higher Res than something like 4xAA but that again would depend on your system/monitor.
If the features were present in the game options i would set all the settings for my graphic card to 'Application pref' or 'Performance' and tailor your graphics settings via the game menu.

I dont have the game yet (UK) but i plan to run the game in 1600x1200 though if the text is too small i might reduce it ot 1280x and mess around with my quality settings to find the look i'am happy with though i have a feeling that AA will be unecessary on a game which from the demo appears to be viewed from a distance most of the time.

I got the game this morning 1 day before its Friday release here in the UK, good old Gameplay. First thing I noticed was that I couldent set the resolution above 1024x9xx, so after scouting the net I found that this is a bug the game reports the wrong resolutions, the cure is to go into the preferences.txt in your game foulder and type it in your self, this will put the game into the right res: even though the game will still report the wrong res:, some are saying its just a text error within the game, nothing serious.
Other than that the game looks awsome baby. :jester:

I totally agree. On a game like totalr war where you have the potential to see many, small units on screen at once I find it better to play at the highest res your card/monitor combination can handle and forget the FSAA. Anisotropic filtering is very important for image quiality as it ensures that distant textures remain sharp. With the demo I played at 2048 x 1538 res with no FSAA and 16x AF and got roughly the same performance as the kind of res I would use on a FPS game (1280x1024 4xFSAA 16XAF). For me, detail is more important and at anything higher than 1600x1200 you're not gonna see jaggies anyway - unless you're sat ten inches from a 21" monitor ~:cool:

So what is the fix for this resolution bug, what exactly needs to be typed into that txt file?

I typed in the 1280x1024 as the options menu in game wont go above 1024x9zxx, but you type in any resolution that your GC and monitor can take.
As I said before the game will still report the wrong res: but the game plays in the res: you have typed in.
People are saying its just a text error in game and the reported 1024x9xx is a higher res:, but by tryping it in here you can make sure its at the res: you want.
