Castle defenses
Hey guys, I have another mod question. Is there any mod out there that makes it so that castles can't be destroyed by troops? I find it kind of silly that giant stone walls can be destroyed in a few minutes by a bunch of guys with spears, lol. Shouldn't it be that you need siege equipment to assault a castle?

Re: Castle defenses
Troops can only destroy wooden walls. They throw burning torches at them untill they burn down. You can't attack stone walls with troops.

Re: Castle defenses
Troops can destroy wooden stockade fences and castle gates (even gates on stone castles) by "attacking them" but not stone castle walls as DisruptorX says. At least, not in my experience. Archers can also burn down wooden stockade fences with their arrows.

Re: Castle defenses
Maybe Sirrvs knows something we don't! I have never been able to attack anything other than wooden walls and gates without seige equiment. Of course, in reality sappers and miners could attack castles even without seige engines.

Re: Castle defenses
I believe Sirrvs is mentioning a feature that has been removed with VI (or possibly even with the 1.1 patch), so the answer would be: buy VI.

Re: Castle defenses
VI?? Maybe I have an older version. I remember trying to install a patch and I think it said I already have the latest version. What version of the patch do I need? Because troops can always just walk right up to the gate and hack away at it.
[edit]Oh, guys, I didn't realize VI means "Viking Invasion" and not "6." I do have Viking Invasion. I got it in that Medieval Total War Battle Collection. And enemy troops are still able to knock down my stone walls![/edit]

Re: Castle defenses
err...confused. ~
I've had the enemy try to smash down my stone wall, with sounds and everything....but the thing is that they couldn't actually do any damage to it.

Re: Castle defenses
This I should like to see! Any chance you can post a picture of your troops knocking down a stone wall Sirrvs? MTW should say v2.01 in the top left hand corner of the Main Menu screen for the latest version of Viking Invasion.

As requested.

Hmm, I just realized, I can't actually make my troops attack the WALLS, but the gates yes. Was it actually possible to knock down gatehouses somehow without the use of catapults or battering rams?

Re: Castle defenses
Sirrvs - Thanks for the pic and see my post above. Infantry can still break through the gate of stone-walled castles assuming they survive the burning oil, arrows, rocks, etc which get thrown at them while attempting the breakthrough. The attackers have a pretty tough time of it and are then squeezed into a very narrow entrance for the defending troops to massacre them on breakthrough - if handled properly.
Have no idea how realistic this may be to breakthrough the gate of a tough castle "unaided" as it were. In fact, pretty unrealistic I would have thought.
Unfortunately, MTW does not seem to model multiple gates, moats and drawbridges which I imagine many of the stronger castles had some or all of these at the time.

Re: Castle defenses
Ah, so is there a way to mod the gatehouse to be invincible to troops?
Too bad, moats would and drawbridges have been cool. I feel like the attackers have a really easy time assaulting castles in this game.
[edit]Do you guys know maybe what file these kinds of rules would be stored in? (like if I wanted to make the Gatehouse resistant to troops just like stone walls?)[/edit]

Re: Castle defenses
I'm still learning the ropes at MTW and STW did me a disservice by making siege battles all too easy to win (even the big castles always had an open gateway) using a 'tried and trusted' technique. So, having now suffered ludicrously heavy casualties against peasant/militia rabble, as a result of assaulting through the gate, when I could have chosen to bring siege engines with me and knock a wall down, I can appreciate how the whole point of a moat and drawbridge is to ensure that, even if a wall was taken out, you still couldn't get to the breach and the attack HAS to go in via the gate. Castles are shaped in such a way as to make the atackers go where the [I]defender] wants them to be.
In most wargames I've encountered, castles are treated as a 'force multiplier', giving a bonus of x3 up to x10 to the numbers of defenders, where battle results are calculated using tables.
In MTW it's probably even worse for the attacker. The three or four guys in the front rank of the defending unit which is blocking the gate can score lots kills very rapidly and their individual valour score goes up a notch at 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 kills. Your attacking unit are probably all the same valour until combat gets underway and while they queue up and die like flies, the defending men get ever harder to beat, until perhaps fatigue begins to set in. When they do die, replacements move in and clock up kills equally fast. Rather galling to see peasants an militia holding off CMAA with ease.
Can't say I've noticed the boiling oil thing yet but it's bad enough as it is with the 'free' arrows and ballistas the defender gets. Plain forts and keeps aren't so bad but I'm already having second thoughts about future assaults on 'serious' castles.
