A More Thorough Study of Vice and Virtue

A post here a few days ago got together with my sleeplessness and gave birth to a couple new Vice and Virtue pages.

I've never found a thorough VnV list - the ones available for download and posted on the net include only the originals, none of the 'changes' traits. This new list has about 100 more VnV's than the standard download lists, pretty close to complete.

I've been getting some good corrections and additions for the list from folks on the totalwar.com forums, was hoping to get the same from members here. I'm interested in any corrections or additions I can get, especially on activators for the traits - how the VnV's are commonly activated or farmed...

Two things, the gambler line is to the bad governor lines (those V&V you get when you're "too" big).

The other is that the Fearsome Group (natural leader line) is somehow linked to your general leading the battle (= first into the fray or something simular) in several battles (3 or 4).

Only seen it once (v2.1) so I don't have investigated throughly, but I've never seen a natural leader advance to a fine leader except that one time so it isn't random.


Too bad that they didn't include many of the V&V in normal play. :sad:

While working on this list and trying to remember all the tips I once knew for managing traits, I've been watching the V&Vs in my games closely. A few oddities have left me with some questions, thought I'd see if anyone could shed some light:

1. I haven't seen the 'mercy' or the 'rebel killer' traits (Occasional mercy, swift justice, etc) since I started playing - no matter how many rebels I set free or kill, or in what numbers, no sign of either trait. I'm playing VI, 2.01 patch, campaigning once as Egypt and a couple times as Turks. Were these traits done away with in VI or the patch, or are they not available to Islamic nations?

2. I noticed something I've never seen before - a general losing his faith. He started out Devout, dropped to Believer, then lost the virtue altogether. Simultaniously, he developed the 'drinker' vice. What the... :eek

3. Along similar lines: I had a good governor develop one of the 'Sprawling Empire' vices - Family Favourites. Irritated, I sent him to my ruler, threw him under the rulers stack, with the intent of sending an emissary to strip him of his titles - then forgot about him for several turns. When I did remember and went to pull the governor from my Sultan's stack - the vice was gone! Does quality time with a monarch cure those sprawling empire vices?

I don't know about spending time with the ruler removing vices but I have several times likewise earmarked a Governor for "title stripping" without him being under the influence of a ruler. A couple of turns later when I had an emissary available, the vice has suddenly disappeared from the governor. I have no idea why.

Last night I tested #3 - had a governor develop the "Philosophically Inclined" vice. Moved him to my sultan's stack (just him and the Sultan), checked back two turns later to discover the vice had vanished... hoping someone else will test this in one of their late games.

The vices only appear when the rebels are actually rebelling against you. Killing the soldiers or ordinary rebel-occupied territory or of rebellions against other rules doesn't gain you these vices.

I keep most border provinces in a state of constant rebellion - I get to free or enslave 'uprising rebels' pretty much every year.

I just did a third reinstall to test out where the V&V problem appears - Mercy/Rough Justice appears fine during the M:TW 1.0 and 1.1 test games, but vanished the moment I install VI, and does not reappear with the 2.01 patch. ~:confused:

The governour seems to get them instead, when it's rebels in your own provinces. Although, I usually don't rebel my provinces so I can remember wrong.

And I suspect that only christians get it, in my Egyptian campaign I never got swift justice, wich I usually get after killing rebels two times.

Midnite, have you checked the V&V problems with the Christians?
Edit: Forgot to say, great work Midnite, comprehensive list which could help with working out how to farm more V&Vs.

I tried as the Danes, but that was 1.1, not VI. The fact that those traits showed up in my Turkish Sultan in 1.0 and 1.1 left me thinking it couldn't be a Christianity/Islam difference.

Still tweaking the list and finding notes for it. I've noticed lately that traits of one 'Group' can actually transition into traits of another 'group' when complete. For example, the Pride group transitions into the Sloth group:

Pride Group:
• Secret Pride - He cannot admit being wrong, and has killed members of his staff who had the talent to prove him wrong. This trait does, however, give him great confidence in personal combat. -1 command, +3 valour. Pride Group. Becomes:
• Pride - His habit of killing staff members who prove him wrong is now widely known, and so he finds it impossible to get anyone to serve him. However, his legendary pride does make him formidable in combat. -2 command, -2 acumen, +3 valour. Pride Group. Becomes:
• Lazy - He suffers from sloth, finding it difficult to attend to his duties. -1 command, -1 acumen. Sloth Group. Becomes:
• Very Lazy - He is a master of sloth and procrastination, being most creative in devising excuses for putting off hard work. -2 command, -2 acumen. Sloth group.

A logical transition, from a variant that gives you both benefit and problem to one that gives you only problems. It seems to need a trigger - appears to happen only when a general with pride is inactive for a period of time or when I autocalc him too many times; never seems to appear as long as I have the general actively battling in player-controlled mode. Haven't had the chance to track it beyond Very Lazy - not sure if it transitions into another of the Seven Deadly Sins or not... :dizzy2:

Now I'll have to take a look at all the other '2 trait' groups and start keeping an eye on them to see if any transition into others.

Strange, I've been getting odd results for rebellions as well. But it did work right in a campaign I played some time ago.

BTW, the pride vice is bugged: the effects of pride and secret pride are switched. So if your governor goes from secret pride to pride he will gain acumen and command. Silly, isn't it?

I have seen generals with pride lose the said command and acumen, I have seen them only lose the 1 command. It is seriously buggy and a real pain in the @ss.
Midnite - tested the "incest with his daughter" (questioned over at .com), married kings cannot do this - at least the Danes can't. Of course it is catch 22, has to be married to have a daughter, won't let me drop the princess on the king so...eh. Perhaps it was one of the thing the Devs left out like Early VG but left in the files - there is even a reference somewhere to Mamluk Camel Gunners IIRC.

i got secret rough justice in an accident. my general had "+1 dread" already. in battle, i killed the first rebel- prisoners, then caught a few more, which where excecuted right after. - i worried if i now get an even worse V&V, but when i took a look "secret rough justice". this was with HRE, in friesland (freisland)-high
