Mass Battle in RTW?

Hey,

question:

I am new...well I play now for three weeks, intensively, at the cost of my GF, who hates me right now, ghehe :)

But I miss something in the game: The Mass battle of 10.000 people.

I play campaing at Medium diff. But the biggest army I can deploy is like 700 peeps. Is there some way to deploy at once like several thousands? So It would be more like "realistic". I don't know anything about the real history about those army's but my guess is that If a Roman army shows up with the most of 700 soldiers, the city which is under attack will laugh to there deaths.

So were are those mass battle's...like those from the Lord of the Rings. Just to give you an up to date example.

Deploying several army's at one city is an option, but the AI will controll it, and only if you loose units you are granted a unit.

What is the max size of a army??

i've heard about battles with 20 000 each side but you need a great comp to do that...

Not sure about that - the biggest unit size I've seen is 240 (well, 241...), so 20 of those and you'd have 4800 in one 20 unit stack - So if you had four full armies ...!

Maybe in multiplayer, I suppose - anyone tried?

In past version of Totalwar the maximum troops fielded per battle has been based upon the maximum number of units fielded by the maximum number of players in an Multiplayer online game.

I don't think its is possible to acheive these numbers in single player.

You probably could, but only using a custom battle set up (and it would take 5 hours to play, cos bugger knows what your framerate would be like with this many troops). ~D

In custom battle or MP, the maximum number of men in 29006, and I'd love the rig that can do that at a decent speed. Does anyone know how it was done on Decisive Battles? Was it a CA mod, or something like that? Just curious, since I could never run such a battle.

You have to under stand that professional devolopers computers are probably 3 times more powerful than ours. I've seen it allueded to in print that the video cards that someone who works for CA would have are twice as beefie as anything we could get our hands on.

Thats a bit of random number! Is that the maximum men the game engine can support? Otherwise altering the unit size base number would be possible also. This was fairly easy, if not tedious, in MTW. I haven't checked in Rome but it should still be available for Gi-normous battles! :charge:

It's probably not the max supportable number. It's just the maximum number of units that one of us could see on the field without modding. Realistically, this number requires some pretty weird armies to be fielded.

6 maximum armies in custom & MP
4 of these armies can be the 4 Roman factions which happen to have the largest unit, the 242 man first legionary cohort. 20 of these cohorts, and add one man per army as the general.

(242*20+1)(4)=19364 men, 4 armies filled, all Roman.

The 2 remaining armies have to be non-roman. The next largest unit size is a 241 man unit, found in some spear warbands and phalanxes which have their own unit commander, silver shields, bronze shields, etc. So, same thing as above with 241 in place of 242, and 2 armies in place of 4.

(241*20+1)(2)=9642 men, 2 armies filled, non-roman.

With all slots in all armies filled, that gives you 19364+9642= 29006 men.

That's without modding on huge sizes. I'm sure you can mod larger, doesn't total realism mod do that? I would hazard a guess that the unit max would be one of those magic base16 numers, like 65536 or somesuch.

Before I stop droning on, there is only one other situation I can think of that may give a larger max # without modding. That would occur in the campaign game if you were a roman faction, and a battle occured involving only Romans with all 8 adjacent tiles covered by full roman stacks like the ones used above, no family members. (yeah, right!). Then you can theoretically get 9 Roman armies on the same map. 4841*9=43569 men. I'm not even sure if that's possible. I have no compulsion to try that. My graphics card would launch out of my computer, leaving a comical graphics card shaped hole in my exterior wall.

Hmm you might lag like hell with all that units on the samn battlefield. Depending on your hardwares.

I've bought a new graphics card, so my old one may get the pleasure of trying this!! Strap a big water cooler to it, crank up the clock speeds and watch it burn!! :dizzy2: I'll try and get a screen shot if i can hold this baby together long enough. You were on medium difficulty. And only 400 people. I am on esy, and I get upwards of 4000 people on the battlefield at once. And my unit sizes are normal.

And my unit sizes are normal, and I'm not very far into the game. The only faction I've totally destroyed was Gaul. I'm getting pretty close to eliminating Carthage too.

I usualy move my little board pieces (the little men) in gropes of 3-5 and have HUGE battles. Sadly though because of how dumb the AI is I usualy outnumber the AI armies 3 to 1...

Not quite. See Rome is not very graphics intensive, Rome mainly taxes the cpu and RAM, it does not use advanced lighting effects and such so even though your card is a part of it is not extremely important. Much more important is the processor and RAM. If you got a good Athlon 64 like a 3800 or FX-53 and some fast RAM, cas latency 2 or so and a competent video card you would be fine for the bigger battles, maybe not for 29k men but definately for 10k. On my relatively old machine with a 2.8HTIntel, a 9600 PRO, 1024 of Kingston DDR 3200 (400mhz) RAM cas latency 3 and a decent motherboard I can get tolerable frame rates with 6000 men in the field most of whom are being AI controlled. Once I upgrade to an FX-55 and 6800 GT with 1024 of cas latency 2 RAM I will be quite well off indeed! ~:cool:

P.S. The game engine could theoretically support many more soldiers than the current limit however if the coding is not optimized for battles that large there could be stability issues, for example multiplayer on SNES emulators over the internet, they are not coded well even though a 56k modem can easily handle the iformation for more complex and demanding games, that are optimized for online play to some extent.

sorry for offtopic but i just had to ask this. do pro devs take these uber video cards home for personal use? or are they just uhm, office use? very curious.

What is the point with a huge amount of men in field ??

More important would be to have a feature so that you could watch a auto-resolved battle. You would of course be able to zoom your camera where ever you wanted... That would make me more inspired than the screen filled with ants...... ~;)
