Iberia: Total War

Hi to everybody,
I am proud to announce the development of a new mod called Iberia: Total War. The web page www.iberiatw.tk is still under construction but the forum is open.
The origin of this mod was the feeling that the spanish faction had been undervalued a bit in the normal game, and also the importance that the conquest of Hispania had for the creation of a truly roman empire.
This mod has two objectives:

1 - The development of a totally new spanish faction for the "normal" game. This will require a total reskin of the current units and/or the design of new units, together with new banners for the faction. Part of the work already done can be seen in the following forum:

2 - The creation of a new campaign focused on the conquest of Hispania.
As I posted in the general forum, this objective required cutting the existing map, enlarging it to a size comparable to the original one and placing new provinces up to a value in the range of 70-80.
Firstly only factions from the Iberian peninsula and "foreign" powers (romans, carthage, greeks) where considered. However, large parts of the map remained empty and it seemed advisable to include some other factions, such as numidian and gauls.
A first project of factions is the following (sorry for the mistakes in English spelling ~:confused: ):

For the moment the 14 factions are placed in a simple map and next operations are:
- Correcting the mistakes in the coasts and some ground_types.
- Including all the missing provinces, settlements and ports.
- Re-design of the factions involved, both in graphical aspect and character.

This project is being developed by a small team, with the help of people from clan celtiberos, mainly in the historical aspects (http://www.celtiberos.com/modules.ph...viewforum&f=21).
I hope this project will be interesting for the RTW community. :bow:

that would be cool to set up a spain mod... I was disappointed by the gameplay it offered in RTW, I played spain more often than not in MTW so. I can't help you out because I dont know jack about modding but goodluck with this it looks like a good start.

This post is only to report some progress in the campaign map. After reading some posts in different forums, this seems to be one of the few working maps smaller than the original one.
I have finished the first version of the province distribution in the iberian peninsula. This is the result:

I hope that in a few weeks the first version of the map will be finished. This will be the moment to decide the exact number and name of the factions, the tech development of each faction, the troops present in each province, the behaviour of each faction and the starting relationships (at war or allies).

I have finished the first version of a fully functional map with 72 regions, divided in 30 in the iberian peninsula, 15 in Italy (including cisalpine gaul), 15 in the rest of Europe, 7 in Africa and 5 in the islands ~:) .

(sorry, it is a forum in Spanish, but the map and the names of the regions must be easily understandable).
Even, if you are registered in the celtiberos webpage, you can download this version and play the provincial campaign at the current state of development. The advantage is that this campaign does not modify the normal game and can be easily removed.

Next step will be the economical aspects of the map (resources and agriculture), together with some polishing of geographical (rivers, coasts, mountains) and political (regions limits, settlements placement) aspects.
The question of factions will come later.

Tío, no lo pillo. ¿Están los vascones y no los cántabros que lucharon doce años contra Augusto?. Por si no lo sabes, esa rebelión se llama aún las "Guerras Cántabras".

Me parece una omisión imperdonable.

Sí, ya sé que están entre los celtas, pero a pesar de las influencias célticas, cántabros y astures -al contrario que galaicos y norlusitanos, no fueron colonias celtas. Están mucho más relacionados con los vascones, un pueblo aliado de los cántabros, a los que has dado una facción aparte.

En realidad, para hacerlo con rigor debería haber una facción -cántabros- que agrupara a cántabros, astures, vascones y várdulos. Los celtas, aunque influyeron poderosamente en estos pueblos, sólo ocuparon efectivamente el noroeste peninsular.

Just for people who don't understand Spanish, I summarize the last two posts saying that the opinion of Dux Corvanus is that Vascones shouldn't be a faction in the game, but Cantabrians would be a better option (all this said in a not very polite manner, in my opinion).

However you must think also in the historical period. The game starts around the beginning of the first punic war. You are speaking of facts near 300 years later, during the Augustus regime.

Personal remark: think about how would you feel if your three-month work were qualified as "imperdonable" (unpardonable = no mercy). I am very proud of my work, mainly in the technical aspect, given that, in my knowledge, this is the first fully functional partial map described in the RTW modding forums. I has seen modifications of the original map and expansions, but not enlargements of a small part, and I can say that it was not easy.

I just went nuts when I saw that an important factor in ancient peninsular history was simply dispatched as a minor part of a tangent -but not proper- culture, while other - very closely related- one that rarely was even mentioned till rare excerpts of visigothic and frank sources was set apart from its near relatives and distinguished with its own faction, and I mistook it for some kind of nationalistic bias.

If I was wrong, again, sorry. I've never doubt of your talent, tho. Only of your sources. They were -and still are- unpardonable. Read my post again, I never said anything about your work. It has nothing to do in this. I admire it.

Anyway, you must know: vascones were first mentioned even later, by Titus Livius in times of Titus Vespasian, and it's just a mention, no more, the same as Strabo. Cantabrii, on the contrary, played a significant role in the conquest of the peninsula, and were reportedly used as mercenary by Pompey.

Just my self-justification and my apologize.

In fact the campaign map is almost finished. I have stablished the city level and population for all the settlements. I have put the agents for all the factions. The colors have been changed.
Now I am trying to modify the models used for generals and captains and preparing new buttons and banners. (I have a fight with the symbols in the campaign map banners, but nobody seems to know how to solve ~:confused: ).
Even I have included new names for the iberian factions.
Finally I want to change a little the ground types, giving more opportunities for ambushes.

On the other hand, Viriato keeps on doing more units and reskins and I hope that we will start soon with the inclusion of those new units in the map.

Finally I solved the problem with strat banners (lack of experience with alpha channel :embarassed: ). I have selected some celtic and iberian symbols for the factions and I have prepared banners and buttons. Here you have some examples:

Finally I have adapted the ZoR system of RTR (with permission of the authors, of course) for recruitment. The factions are divided into six cultures: celts, iberians, africans, hellenic, romans and gauls.
As a hobby ~D I have been reskinning some units for numidians and italic tribes. For example a numidian heavy cavalry (adapted from pontic one) and italic peltasts (from greek ones).

I noticed in one of your earlier screenshots there was a city called "arse". Even though this my be historicelly accurate, perhaps it might be prudent to change its name to ars or arx or something similar, as in English "arse" is a rather rude word. I don't mean to insult your english language skills or anything but mistakes like this have been made in the past (an italian car was called "fart" for instance, and a british company attempted to sell deoderant named "mist" in Germany - "mist" means "dung" in german!). Just to let you know.

I will have to check this kind of problems in the English translation.
(I can tell you that the car Mitsubishi Pajero was called different in Spain. I cannot translate "pajero" in English, but it is not a very polite word ~;) )

The campaign map is very well adapted, what I mean is, when you scaled it up, you have made it look really good, I have great difficulty getting the mountains to look like that...

Well, in fact I didn't modify the mountains from the original files. It is only the result of resizing. We must recognize then that CA did well the work. ~;)

Did you try to do the mountains from a flat map? Perhaps this is the problem.
I have no idea about how to edit map_heights (perhaps with the map editor by Mr.Hide) and map_roughness. Sorry :embarassed:

Let me introduce our best skinner (and the only one, he is a hard-worker ~D ): Viriato.
He is the half of our 2-people modding team to develop the Conquest of Hispania campaign, together with the help of some other people in the documentation "department".

We have some nice ideas for new units, weapons and mounts, but we would need the help of some experienced modeller.
