And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
Saw this article today about an Amazon/Roman gravesite in Cumbria.

They seem to think that the Romans hired Amazons into the irregular forces. We aren't going to hear about this in the States, wondering if any of the UK R:TW fans know any more about this. :help:
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
Possibly gladiators that were highly respected. Female gladiators were used (popular maybe) in Briton. Considering gladiators were brought from different regions and to some was a high source of entertainment a rich person could have had them imported.
Don't know how they could tell the skeletal origin was not from Briton, but I highly doubt it was part of the Roman army.
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
Never heard of that before. Never knew women fought with the Romans. Must be gladiators.
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
They were buried alongside a Roman military unit that the archaeologists think is an Eastern European numerii unit. I did a quick google, but it seemed like all the articles are just copy. Looks like this was announced at the end of 2004. The Discovery channel site was a little more informative, but not much.

Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
The amazons that were found weren't like the amazons we've come to love and know on RTW. They were prolly like female versions of sarmatian mercs, so we aren't really missing much.
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
That is true but I didn't know women fought in the Roman armys.
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
I think what the article is trying to say, is that nobody did.
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
Didn't you know? They were used as berserker's one week out of every month!
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
I hear that they were better than most bona fide roman soldiers

What Amazons on RTW?
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
amazons control Hyperboria. Schythed archer chariots, they are killers.

For fantasy/amusement purposes, CA put Amazons into R:TW. They can be found (in the game) in the Hyperboria region, in the northeastern part of the map. It takes forever to get to the town, and they are pretty good fighters.

Or were the men there to satisfy the women and the large disparity between the number of male and the number of female soldiers indicating that the amazons were in fact, sex crazed nympho's. Works for me. ~;)
Re: And we can't hire them as mercs?!?!?!
Chances are these girls were really butch, I mean they'd have to be in order to be a WOMAN in the ROMAN army.

I think one of their decendants became the Super Heroine known as The PMS Avenger .
