Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
Hey is it just me or are the Phalanges acting a bit odd?
In two battles now I have had a phalanx turn around and present their backs to the enemy. This was whilst engaged mind you. One time the guard mode was on, the other off. The guard on phalanx was protecting a bridge crossing and was left alone. The other group, guard off, was given the order to attack a unit.
Anyone else have any odd behaviour with phalanges?
Re: Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
Haven't had a huge amount of experience with them post-patch, but I'm finding them much easier and 'natural' than before.
Pre-patch, if you wanted to change facing, or even attack another unit at an oblique angle, the whole unit would disengage, raise spears, shuffle round and reform before lowering their spears; now, the unit seems to more naturally flow round the enemy unit, staying in contact at all times, then slowly reform the phalanx. Seems to work ok - but as I say, I haven't had a huge amount of post-patch phalanx action.
Re: Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
I have not that this issue, but I have had some serious troulbe with the new patch, which I HATE.
Everytime I try to play Mutliplayer, the game will lose Gamespy connection every 5-10 minutes or so, & 90% of the time when I get on a battle, right as I enter, I get the end battle results, "unresolved", & am exited, I host mind you, so ist not a punt or anything...
Also the game likes to shut off by itself irratically. I personally dislike this piece of s**t that everyone was hailing to be the best thing to happen to RTW, fools.
But it does fix some things, like shooting my men in the back with arrow's, but other than that, I hate it!
Re: Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
I have serious troubles keeping my phalanxes into formation after the patch. Many times they just suddenly decide that the phalanx formation is not good at all... They will disperse and fight on with swords! This happens usually when the pikes weren't yet ready, and the AI attacked swiftly before it was impossible. It's heartbreaking to see all your powerful levy pikemen switch to knifes to fight Nubian spearmen... ~:mecry:
Now it could be that this was in pre-patch already, but now that the AI actually charges on the right moment it comes up a lot.
Re: Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
Ellesthyan - I've noticed that too, I guess its a choice of a) pre-patch: having your phalanx remain in formation, but either only contact the enemy at one corner, or be swamped and flanked/attacked from the rear, or b) post-patch: having your unit react to the enemy more, not get flanked, but break phalanx formation easily.
It seems now that phalanxes are only really effective (as phalanxes) when hit head on (not necessarily at right angles, but with no flanking) - so there's even more reason to use them in a long, unbroken line. Is that more historically accurate? Or not? Who knows? And does the hitting-backspace-to-reform-the-phalanx trick still work?
Also, when looking closely at some phalanxes, it appears that some of the troops on the outside, where the formation has been disrupted use knives, but the bulk still appear to have their spears lowered - can a unit be half in/half out of a formation?
Re: Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
I love the changes made to phalanx units. They definitely seem to behave more realistically now and they engage enemy units more quickly and effectively than before. If they're somewhat more vulnerable than before then so be it, the phalanx formation was notoriously vulnerable from the sides and rear, certainly moreso than was modeled in 1.0 and the 1.1 patch.
Re: Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
Phalanx units seem stronger now, in medium diffculty you crush evrything that comes frontaly..have to try harder difficultys to see if theres still a diffrence

Oh. Ok, I had never noticed it before.
Thanks for the replies!

Re: Post Reform (Patch) Phalanges
Phalanxes are so much better. Now they only seem to move sideways to the right before engagement.
Although somehow in a twisted way, I kinda missed the original right drift of the old Phalanx. The extra animation kinda give a sense of mobility... before they all get slaughtered in the flanks of course..
