Okay, this is a stupid question.
Is it at all possible to issue a command for my archers to attack the enemy in close combat, before they've run out of arrows?
Does simply giving them an order to move "through" an enemy unit cause them to charge the unit in question, or are they just going to get cut to ribbons because they weren't prepared to fight?
Hold alt, then click on the enemy. They will attack in close combat. They're crap though.
Archers are ok if you are desperate, but they are about as good as Ashigaru without the cavalry-bonus. Basically, hit em in the flank or rear.
Correct. You can also put them in wedge formation, unless you're using them to attack a much smaller enemy unit; in that case put them in two or three rows so they can 'envelop' the enemy unit. Make them attack downhill if you can. In fact do anything to evade a full frontal fight with any other type of unit, because, yeah, archers really suck at hand to hand combat.Quote:

So short version: Use them indirectly to flank a tied-up unit which is giving you problems. Set them either on a very broad front or a Wedge and charge into them downhill or from flat terrain at worst. Once that threat is gone, you've probably got more profitable things for them to be doing. In My Newbie Opinion. ;)
It's my opinion that if you have to send your archers in then you've done something wrong...rather than thinking about when it is right to send them in and how a good general will come up with tactics for winning without them.
True but I'm sure they can be used to turn the tide of a battle... If you have an army of 1 SA and 1 Ashi defending (though arguably you have made a mistake of guarding an edge territory with such a small army), it is sometimes neccesary to run downhill and flank a few Ashi units to send em runnin' ~;)
Archers are great against other archers or against low level Asighu
Sometimes I used armies of only archers, try it there a pain in the ass to beat
I don't agree that you have done something wrong if you have to engage the enemy with your archers in close combat. They are warriors, on the battlefield for a reason. It would be foolish not to use them to their fullest. Just... don't use them foolishly or capriciously, for as Sasaki-san suggests they are not your primary melee troops.
Doing the unexpected, being unpredictable, is a formidable weapon in war. I think it is usually a mistake to say that one should never do this or that. Do what a situation calls for, however unconventional it might seem out of context.
I use archers to attack effectively, usually against other archers or ashigaru, or against the flanks or rear of any troops that are engaged with other troops. You can often affect an enemy unit's morale such that they flee with a well-timed and angled double-team.
Sasaki doesn't need to melee attack with archers because his mastery of tactics and control on this game's battlefield far exceed those of most Shogun MP players I've encountered. I can testify to this because I've battled against him many, many times (and lost, mostly). If you would like some lessons in frustration, meet him for 1v1 battles on the Fakeserver, or using the Samurai Wars mod for MTW.

Lol, thanks Drisos, but I'm not an expert by a longshot. I've just played a LOT. Sasaki is the amazing one on the S:TW battlefield. Pisses me off to no end ... hehe. Somebody go own him would ya? Then come and brag about here so I can gloat. ~D
