New way to play

started playing again,RTR 4.cant remember ~D , anyway to make gameplay different, i thought id try a different approach :anxious: , see what you think? my style of play is almost role playing, for example, whatever city a general is born in, then this is the city he will die in, so say a general is born in arretium, at the age of 16 he will be sent to join his father/grandfather in whatever campaign there engaged in, when his father has reached 65, i retire him to his home city Arretium, & the son then inherits the army, if the son manages to reach 65 then he gets pensioned off & can live out his days in peace, however when i say he inherits the army, this is not strictly true, because the army his father soldiered with are retired as well, they receive there inheritance, so the new general & his men must hold the fort/city until a new army joins them ~:confused: this can take several turns so progress is slow, no blitzkrieg, only units from the generals home city are recruited, along with aux units from provences occupied from said general :dizzy2: so, again this really slows down progress, but keeps you on your toes
the effect is that certain families from certain cities fuel or supply an individual campaign, the same applys to armadas, a fleet is retired upon retiral/death of their admiral, assasins & diplomats are allowed to retire as well, (wages can get out of hand if not monitered) the only downside is the micro management! ie need a notepad at all times, but i find it really keeps your interest, & as long as i dont get to drunk :barrel: then it is managable ~:) what say you? different approach, or complicating things :hide:

you must have alot of time on your hands. btw have you tried upgrading to rtr 5.4?

upgrade it to what, RTR already slowsdown your game because building times are longer, more provinces and other things.

I think coming up with different role play ways of playing the game is great. I do it all the time. Im trying atm to rush through my production capabilities as a roman, so I get all the exotic units they can give, im then going to role play - Tru roman civilian type rebels and get myself ousted by the senate.

The only units I will produce are - peasants, Gladiators, arcanii, Wardogs, pigs. Possibly the Ilyrian mercs for hire on the italian mainland. No diplomats, but lots of spys and assasins. This will be a tough one to do. but it will make it fun. Slow build times for my troops will hamper mass production.

i like to implement an RPG element into RTW but sometimes it gets too complicated...

I don't really understand your system furry boots but I kind of like the general idea. What you're saying is each city has its own army, which cannot be swapped around with armies from other cities? Or are you saying that each nuclear family has its own unique cluster of cities?

Whatever you mean, I think the general idea has possibilities that could help to make the game more of a challenge.

what if a general dies in battle? or on his way home? i'd say that's too much of an effort to carry out.. but if that's how you like to play - good luck and enjoy it ~:cheers: ~:cool: ~D ~:cheers: ~:cool:

the eldest son always accompanys his father, other sons manage cities, taken by their father,regerdless of there stats! if theres only 1 son, then hewill manage a city untill another son/son in law/adopted son is available, No progress is made unless theres enough generals, so a general may only take 2/3 provences in his life time, but with RTR you get plenty time, its a very complicated way of doing, not for everyone i'll agree
oh! & if a general dies, the the whole army is dissbanded
currently, its year 214bc, & i only have the italian peninsular & scicilly & corsica/nearly sardinia, this style of play lends itself more to RTR with the more cities :juggle2:

Well, new ways to play are excellent, and you are one of them. They also tend to slow down your game years, hence more movement by the AI. However, there is always one damn horrible problem to deal with when it comes to very long games (in turns, not necessarily real time) is that Egypt will conquer everything and get the fun out of the game. You should tone them down A LOT if you want a fun game with all those mighty unit rosters available to the Seleucids, Pontus, Armenia, and Parthia. Or else you'll get bored killing the Ptolemaic units (for RTR) all the time. And if vanilla? It's MUCH worse...

I didn't know the egyptians conquered everything really fast? I'm playing as them now and I've conquered the whole Eastern Side of the map lol. But I didn't know the AI Egyptians were that good? ~:confused: ~D ~:cool:

Furry boots, I'm still finding it a bit difficult to understand exactly what your method is. Any chance you could post it in detail sometime, as a clearly articulated set of rules? I'd certainly be interested in reading it.

The AI Ptolemies were absolutely overpowered, my friend.

They outnumber all their rivals, outproduce, got much more money, make a steady expansion upon the *could've been cool* Seleucids.

And that is toned down Ptolemaics of RTR.

If Vanilla? Unless you fight them early they will ALWAYS - Repeat - ALWAYS become the most tedious superpower after the Romans. They have even more resources, even more money, even more men, even weaker Seleucids to deal with, and, most importantly; they almost always win an AI vs AI auto-calc battle due to the overpowered chariots in Autocalc mechanics.

Side note: A chariot unit counts almost as much as elephants when the game Autocalc your battle results against (or with) them.

wow ~:eek: , egyptians are my first eastern campaign so i haven't taken them on in a battle yet.
