Of the ones I have seen I would have to say Full Metal Jacket. Great movie, with one of the best drill sergeants in history, R. Lee Ermey.
Mch as I love full metal jacket I have to say Dr Strangelove maybe my favorite movie of all time.
That's a tough one .Don't think I've ever seen a Kubrick film I didn't like.
Went for Barry Lyndon ,but 2001 ,and The Killing were up there.
It was a hard decision for me between Spartacus and 2001. 2001 won my vote.
Very tough choice.
I chose A Clockwork Orange because it was so out of the ordinary. He has several masterpieces that rank amongst the best films ever, at least of their genre, but Clockwork Orange was a groundbreaker that went further than 2001 or Dr. Strangelove. Both films being incomperable in their own way.
Also, Paths of Glory, which I just got on DVD (for $7 ~:) ) is a great movie!
Oh hell, they're all great movies. (Except for EWS, but that's just me.)

2001, but EWS and Strangelove... ehr, actually they are all good in their own way since they are so different.
Barry Lyndon sure gets my vote for best soundtrack along with FMJ.

i don't think Kubrick makes good films. i think Kubrick makes good scenes. but as a whole, they are not cohesive or consistenly-entertaining.
i agree with Barry Lyndon having the best soundtrack - it's truly awesome!
i recently watched Barry Lyndon because i saw one of my favorite actors (Jeffrey Combs) recommend it in an interview.
i felt that Barry Lyndon totally fell apart in Act 2. the movie no longer was about Barry, but rather only about the people surrounding Barry. Barry became a supporting character in his own movie.
oh yeah, and the final duel was pathetic.
i also did not appreciate the lusting-for-your-own-cousin theme and the other disgusting scenes in the film. seems that Kubrick had a thing for putting perverted scenes in all of his films. :dizzy2:
i do respect his cinematography. the films look good. but looking good alone does not make a good film.
for A Clockwork Orange: it started out really strong. but it got really really boring after the main guy goes to jail, and stayed boring until the end of the film. and again, the ending sucked. they should have had the film run for an extra hour to show the activities of the main guy again; in the aftermath of his recovery from brainwashing. instead they condensed what should have been an hour into a 30-second scene. lame! :furious3:
and that's why I voted for Strangelove
Its the Kubrick folm that is a coherent movie, tells a great story in a very eloquent way. A lot of his flicks I'd agree with the assertion that he made good scenes but not good mivies, but Strangelove is a great film in the total sense.

I only liked the HAL part of 2001, so my vote has to to Clockwork Orange.

If you read the book you'd know that a Clockwork Orange was the title of that old guy's book. It's meant to be an omage to the time that Anthony Burgess lived in Indonesia where orange might mean man. So it's like clockwork man which refers to Alex having the characteristics of the inside of a clock. Do you understand?

That being said, my favorite scene of any movie is the beginning of 2001, where humanity invents tools. Set to Strauss's symphony, itself inspired by teh works of Nietzsche. What else could one ask for?
The most courageous of his films has to be Dr. Strangelove. to make a film like that just after McCarthyism and during the blacklisting of directors took massive, massive cohones. And it was darn funny to boot.
I was disappointed with EWS, and felt it was an uncharacteristic down note on which to end his career.

FMJ has some of the best dialogue as well. It is a little to gritty though. Normally they wouldn't abuse the fatass for so long. They would kick him if he was so unfit.
Full Metall Jacket, cause it's a world of pain out there... Dr. Strangelove I ain't seen yet. It's scheduled to be om my viewing screen in 2 weeks time...

I heard it was very funny.
Dr Strangelove, an incredibly unique movie. Hard to find fault with it.
Closely followed by Barry Lyndon, stunning visuals and perfect musical score, pretty faithful to the book, and ridiculously over budget! Most costume dramas are lifeless and dull, this one just captured the atmosphere so perfectly. Shame it lost momentum towards the end.
