Noobie here, some help?

Just recently starting playing this game as Julli on Easy/Easy because I've never played a game like this before, I hardly play games so it's taking me some time to get used to it and luckily I read alot of the faqs and manual.

Reading some FAQs around, I tried my best to follow them and currently I own Corinth, Castilla or something, Sparta, Crete, Carthage(Captial), and northern Italy which is blockaded to prevent Gauls from pouring in like water on rock. I'm readying a force to take out Gaul and maybe start a war with the Numidians to secure my position and cut off Scipii, I've already cut off Brutii from advancing any further but I was unable to prevent thermon and athens from falling into their hands and their fighting the macedonians.

Carthage pretty much is pumping out Principles, so far the best units I have on hand and are upgraded with an armoury I think along with one of my core cities.

I think most of my victories were because of my wardogs which I must admit are nice cannon fodder and can distract and hold an enemy long enough to either route them or allow your guys to flank them. Another thing I noticed is that the enemy never charges in front of you and always splits up into smaller groups which are easy for my troops to flank and smash them, does the AI always does this?

well actually it, does. it does the same thing as you do, but it doesnt respond that fast. a few units flank, a few units attack the center. but i yuo move before they attack they're mostly screwed.

Welcome to the Org! Sounds like you are off to a good start, though that's the first time I've heard of someone crediting wardogs as being their decisive, battle-winning unit. ~;)

Many members here will agree with you that the AI acts arthritic and indecisive in the tactical context. I, for one, take that with a grain of salt. No computer program is going to be up to snuff against a competent human player. The AI usually comes straight at you, and its infantry line often does break up into individual units or small groups. From what I have been able to observe, the AI-controlled infantry units will break off from their initial objectives and turn on a missile unit when attacked. This does disrupt the AI's lines and makes them easy to flank. The AI does a better job with cavalry and missile troops, however, so beware when you are fightings the Macedonians or Egyptians, for example. At any rate, I would imagine that so long as you are playing on E/E, you are going to have a fairly easy time of it. Ratchet up your game's difficulty setting for a more challenging time. Enjoy!

Well they usually get wasted to pieces, but doesn't matter because dogs are unlimited, the AI seems to like to target the trainers as well, but then thats the whole point of cannon fodder. The fact is that most of the battles I fought I'm usually outnumbered so the dogs buy me some time by distracting some strong enemies like Spartans to allow my principles to get into position to throw their pillums and flank. I also noticed when my doggies attacked most of the enemy then converged on my dogs which again left their rears and flanks open to my principles and calvary.

That's basically it, they leave their center way too weak to hold so when they flank me and attack my guys on the flank, they basically leave my center free to split up, waste them with pillums and flank them with deadly results. I love legions. ~:cheers: That's basically why I win in most cases and when it comes to seiges, some enemy always attacks me from the behind and the garrisons come out as well so I send in the doggies to mow down the general so in the end I win the battle and get the city without having to break the walls down so I don't have to fix it.

I think I'll stick with easy until I finish all roman factions to get an idea of the game, um, what's a good difficulty to use for a completely fair fight? Like each side is basically equal in its own sense.

1. I think you better raise dif. level up to M/M , or the game will not be so cool.
2. The best dif is VH/M - AI will get some cash bonuses , but battles will be still fair. As for me I played only one VH/VH campaign for Spain , actually I can't say it was challenging.

:embarassed: Yeah....when it comes to games I'm really bad at them.

But medium difficulty? I'll give that a shot then.

Yeah, and you don't really have to play all roman factions to get a taste of the game, unless what you really want is a taste of all the enemy factions. The Julii campaign should be long enough for you to get a feel of how the whole thing works... I mean, 50 provinces? Some of us vets get burnt out before that :-P

challeging it isn't but unfair, very much. when you surround a unit of triarii on all flanks, with hoplites, the ***** won't rout but slaughter all your units. but that isn't fun nor challeging cuz most battle you'll win anyway

I see...hey what about the Maius reforms? When does that occur? I already have an Imperial palace in Carthage and Patavium and it's 220 and still nothing's happening.

do you have patch 1.2 if so you need to wait till the random trigger ocurrs. and Patavuim is italy right, cuz the IP needs to be in italy (the modern borders)

Yup patch 1.2, so what's this random trigger? It's not gonna occur in like 47 AC or something right? Because then that'd be so stupid. ~:handball: I'm not gonna wait that long.

It usually triggers before 199 BC, so no worries.
