A couple questions

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums, but I've played the game for about 6 months and I was just wondering a couple of things.

First, I heard a while ago, that it was possible to take titles away from people. If that's true, how do you do that?

Second, I've noticed with the Spanish, I automatically start out with a building that can be built that produces Crusades, but when I play with other factions, i.e. The Danes, I can't build that building. So, my question is, can only certain civilizations get that building, or does the zeal in a province have to be a certain level before you can build that building??

And third, I've always wondered how to incite a civil war, and I've tried dozens of times to lower the loyalty of one of my heirs so I could have him attempt a coup. Are there any quick ways to do that.. or does anyone know the key factors to starting a civil war??

And to let everyone know, I bought the game at Wal-Mart for only $10, so it didn't come with a manual so there's still quite a few things that I haven't figured out how to do.

First question: Just take a diplomat and drop him on the man who has the title you wish to remove. A remove title parchment should appear then click the seal that has a check mark in it. The title will then reappear on the map ready for reassignment.

Second question: Only certain catholic factions can crusade. English, French, Hungry, Italy, Spain, and the HRE are the only ones that can crusade I believe.

Third question: One way is to take a very low loyaltly general and place him far away from your king with alot of troops. Another is to sent you king to an Island and then cut the ship link back to the mainland, this can start one. One thing about civil wars is that their is no sure way to get one. Just keep playing and they seem to pop up when unwanted and at all the wrong times.

In addition to removing their title by dropping an emissary, you can also kill the guy with an Assassin, fry him with an Inquisitor, or simply disband his unit. You can give his men to another unit by merging his unit with another (drop his icon on the receiving icon), effectively reducing the number of men you would lose by disbanding.

The Danes and Huns cannot Crusade (nor can the Orthodox Christians). Muslim Jihads can be used to reconquer lost provinces.

In addition to the great ideas mentioned by ColdKnight you can launch Crusades then make sure they fail, spend your florins so you are always in the red (this is best done by paying a large ransom), break treaties, and get excommed.

Ichi and ColdKnight have the first 2 questions pretty well covered, so I'm just going throw in a further tip on how to incite civil wars.

It's difficult, but not impossible, to assassinate your own monarch. The key here is that the monarch cannot have any direct heirs who are of age (which means you have to kill any living princes as well), and you usually have to have 1 or 2 generals of royal blood (often the dead king's brothers and/or uncles).

I managed to do this while playing as the Danish. My king (who was so pathetic I don't even remember his name) had something like 1 Influence, 2 Dread, and 0 Command & Acumen. I killed him and his worthless son (with just two 0-star assassins, no less). The "loyalist" faction was led by 2 of my younger (and less experienced) uncles, and the "rebel" faction was led by my older uber-uncle (who had a rating of 6-7 in all areas).

I decided to go with the loyalist faction because I figured going up against my super-general uncle would make for a nice challenge. Also, my 2 younger uncles, while not being as great as their older brother, would still provide a safety net of sorts, in case one of them died.

It was tough, but the 2 younger brothers eventually won in the end, and the glory of the Danish empire was restored. One of the most fun campaigns I'v ever played in Medieval. ~D

I thank you all for your tips, and yeah, with the taking away the title, I figured that out that day when I was just messing around with an emissary and he turned gray when he was over my Master of Stables :)

And with the Civil War thing, I kind of had the idea of taking a high ranking, low loyalty general and stacking him with half of my armies. But I think I was a little too close to the King, because I had my potential civil war inciters in Portugal, and my King was in Mercia. But yeah, I have 5 men of royal blood (the first King's son and the current King's Uncles). But I also had another question, if your King has full influence, would it even be possible to do it that way, because I don't know how he has it, but he's only been king for 4 years and he's one of the most powerful Kings around :(

And the crusade question, thank you, because I mainly play as the Danes and I could never Crusade, and it bugged me, but yes, thanks :)

Influence doesn't really affect how difficult it is to kill your faction leader. An assassin's chance of killing your king (or anyone else, for that matter) are determined by four main factors:

1. How many stars the assassin has.
2. Whether the province has a border fort.
3. How many "counter-agents" (spies, other assassins, etc.) are in the particular province where your target is located. (The more agents in a province, the more likely it is the assassin will be caught.)
4. How many command stars the target has.

In the case where I killed my 0-star Danish king, he was in a province with a border fort. The only agents in that province, however, were 2 assassins; and since I had assigned both of them to kill the king, they weren't trying to thwart each other.

As to why your king has so much influence, some kings simply start with a lot of it when they inherit the throne. This tends to reflect what their real-life counterparts were like in the real world.

Have you checked the CD, there might be a .pdf manual on it. Personally I hate those electronic manuals. Too many pages or graphics to print them out, and they always seem a chore to read on a monitor for some reason.

Hi Lyberoc,

if you haven't a pdf-handbock on your CD (or even if you have one), try out the guides from Frogbeastegg (MTW Beginners guide and especially the Total MTW Unit guide). I got them after I played the game for almost 2 years and still got some eye-openers. They are good reads also.

Sadly the handbook doesn't answer most of the advanced questions.
There should be printer-friendly versions of the guides in this forums also.

Well, King Bob, I was giong to do that, because that's what I generally do, I just wait for games to come out in packages, it's a lot cheaper that way, you just have to wait a lot longer to do it :) But the Wal-Mart in my town is so crappy that I was surprised they had a game as advanced as MTW. Their general run of games is like Pac-Man and Solitaire!! Don't get me wrong, those are two very great games (if you're in to that kind of thing), but when you want a game where you can clash massive armies and kill little guys all day long, the Wal-Mart out here is sadly lacking, at least in the PC area.

And yeah, I've already went through the guide thingies, and yeah, I had a lot of questions answered in those. Otherwise, instead of just three questions to start the topic off, I would've had about 100, and I don't think any of you would have answered 100 questions :)

Oh sure, many of us MTW diehards and vets would have tried out best to answe r them. Because we remeber the pain of trying to learn the answer to those questions ourselves.
