Byzantine Sucession

I was playing the Byzantines, conquering the Russians, subjegating the Almohads etc. Suddenly, my emperor died with a 10 year old heir and I lose due to lack of heirs. However, that's not why I posted this. It pissed me off that that happened so I reloaded autosave. Then I got a civil war(I sided with 9 star John and 7 star Stephan Commenus, formerly of the royal line vs everyone else). I didn't want to reconquer Russia from 2 providenced so I reloaded again, civil war, but this time Stephan died before and I sided iwth John so... I reload again and then both John and Stephan died before so I lose. But then, I reload one more time and when Emperor Constantine IX dies, I get a King John in Naples and my 10 year old heir was gone.

There are two possibilities: A general married to a princess OR the heir was rushed to the throne.

I don't know what happened so I reloaded and my emperor survives for 20 more years.

So where did King John come from and why was he in Naples? The capitol was in Constantinople still.

You know, kings aren't known for monogamy, and that waitress in Naples was so hot... :-P

Very strange, ASM. I don't know if I've ever heard of this phenomenon before. Was John the name of your 10-year old heir, perchance?

If I remember correctly, yes, I had a little John. But why Naples? It's the freaking backwater of the empire!

I absolutely hate how people won't marry your princes because you're jsut owning everything.

If there was any fighting in Constantinople the heirs will emerge in a non-contested area. If there are more base buildings in Naples than in any other non-contested area it would become the temporary capitol.

It was Byz on Early so no problems and Naples had everything up to a swordsmith.

Whether or not this was the case, it still begs the question as to who King John was. Did ASM's young prince suddenly age a decade overnight? Did he have a royal somewhere that he'd forgotten about?

I wonder if your new emperor might be that 9-star General John you mentioned in your first post. If you still have that game saved, I would try looking for General John, and see if he got promoted.

No, he was still sitting in Bulgaria preparing to beat the Huns.

BTW, one correction, John was 14. Personally, I think there might be a roll whether a child will become king. I'll try to find a save before that happened.

Besides, Emperors are designated by last name. This was just Emperor John I.

It should be Constantine X, but it was just John, if it was John Comenus, it'd be Emperor Comenus *. It could be a rare undocced feature or a Baronial thing, someone should mod the situation and see what happens.

Well, I don't really have that much input as to what might have happened, but I had two similar situations happen to me.

At one time, my king had a 14 year old son, died in battle, and my son became King that year. I'm happy to say, that 14 year old son lived to be in his 70s and produced a fine stock of heirs. Seven to be exact and the worst one of them was a 4 star general already. I had fun with his sons, although one of them died in battle. He just had to be the first one to rush into the castle *shakes head*

And then another time my king died in battle with no heirs, but a 7 star general that I had married to my princess became King. I didn't mind, because I kept on going in the game :)

I really do think it's a undocumented closest successor bailout feature.
