Generals' bodyguard upgrade (again)

I have been trhough about three threads on this matter and cannot fathom what I am doing wrong. I've been at this on and off for almost a week and now must ask for some aid.

I have checked the EDU file to make sure the general_unit and (general_unit + general_unit_upgrade) both exist, for the Gauls, the former before the latter...

I have brought forward the upgrade to the Governors_villa (Large Town rather than Minor City), a snippet of that code from the EDB file being:

upgrade_bodyguard 1 requires factions { gauls, }

...

but there is no upgrade available when I move the unit into the large town. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything upgrade and am not even sure how it works - I assume through "training" character units.

I have a totally clean install of R:TW patched to 1.2.

I've also tried "Barbarian" rather than "gauls", and also tried it with the Julii but nothing works.

What am I doing wrong?

Well you only get the general's upgrade once the Marius reforms occur, by which stage there should be many barbarian cities and it happens automatically. If you are wanting the bodyguards to be manually upgraded, that isn't how it works.

Seems strange that non-Roman factions should have to rely on Roman advancement for their own cultural advancement!
