The Latest From South Africa
Quote:
Naivasha, Kenya - A 10-year-old Kenyan schoolboy on Tuesday pleaded guilty to raping a three-year-old girl last month in a case that has shocked the country's central Rift Valley province.
The boy, wearing his school uniform, stunned a packed courtroom in this lakeside town by admitting to sexually assaulting the girl who is still in hospital with serious internal injuries she sustained in the attack.
"It's true as read," the child said in halting Swahili when asked by Naivasha magistrate Jennifer Thuita to respond to the charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl.
His plea was met with gasps and visible displays of shock among spectators who had gathered at the courthouse about 90km north-west of Nairobi to witness the unusual prosecution of a minor on sex charges.
Police said the boy assaulted the girl for unknown reasons after she was briefly left along outside her home when her mother went to the market. The victim suffered vaginal, facial and back injuries in the attack, they said.
Thuita set a June 30th hearing date to receive a report and sentencing recommendation from probation officers.
Kenya's penal code is silent on penalties for under-age offenders, particularly those convicted of serious crimes and legal experts in Nairobi said the presiding judge will have full discretion in imposing a sentence.
"That is why the magistrate asked for a probation report to assist (in) the decision," Nairobi lawyer Kioko Kilukumi said.
"There can be an acquittal or a referral of the offender to a reform school, bearing in mind the age." - Sapa-AFP

Re: The Latest From South Africa
Some of those idiots over there go around raping kids and babies(!) because they think it will cure them of AIDS.
What do you do with people like that?

Re: The Latest From South Africa
Yeah, it's a sick story, but sadly, I'm afraid it's happened before in other places. Heck, there's a guy down in South Carolina who's on trial for raping his next door neighbor's dog, in broad daylight. Apparently, he got so excited, he ruptured multiple internal organs on the poor dog, who ended up dying several weeks later.
More importantly, if you want to talk Apocalyptic tales of man's evil, I have heard three more disturbing stories that bothered me much, much more. I cried out loud when I read about each of these.
1) The woman in South Carolina who murdered her two children by driving them into a retaining pond. The woman in Houston was scarier, but at least you could clearly see in that case, the woman was deranged and completely out of her mind. In the South Carolina case, the woman killed the kids because her new boyfriend didn't want to be a father.
2) That 11-year old kid from the UK who went into a shopping mall, led a toddler out of the mall and into a trainyard, and then proceeded to brick him to death, just to know what it was like. I heard an unconfirmed report that he actually paused several times to revive the toddler.
3) And finally, the one that really, truly broke my heart. A teenage black male who lived in Hartford CT. He was semi-retarded, but by all accounts, had a heart of gold and had a true love of his fellow man. He lived in one of the worst projects in the city. He used to put a towel around his neck and claimed to be Batman and would help old people in and out of the building (as he was 6'6" and weighed over 350 lbs). Well, one day, some younger kids, who had no grudge against this guy, came by with a case of soda. They proceeded to pelt him with the soda cans, even after the guy, screaming and crying, begged for his life. He died there on the lobby floor. Now here's when I almost stopped believing in God, and I did stop believing in the inherent goodness of man. During the attack, at least 10 residents walked through the lobby, including several whom had been assisted by the boy. Nobody called the police.

It is very sad how little some people care about other living beings.

I think your thoughts on the matter show that your statement has no merit. ~;)

Re: The Latest From South Africa
No, because the youths that did that weren't misguided. They weren't troubled. They weren't from broken homes. Sure, they were living in a poor neighborhood, but there was no motivating factor for them to do what they did, and worse, there was no malign influence that co-opted them into it. They just did it. I'm not saying all humans are evil, or that no humans are good. I'm saying it became clear to me that day it's not something you can take for granted.

Yeah, if you substitute the word 'evil' for 'different' we all live in a much happier place! Happy happy! Callously watching a retard be bludgeoned to death isn't evil! It's happily different!

Saying that it's evil makes it sound like you think that some devil is inside them or that they are devils of some sort. I think that's ridiculous. We have to acknowledge that they probably thought it would be fun, disregarding any laws and morals.

No, you're intolerance-for-people-with-faith-detector was set off when you saw the word evil and assumed I implied religious qualities to either evil or good.
I don't believe in Jesus, Buddha, Vishnu H Shiva, Demons, Thor, or the Tooth Fairy. I absolutely believe in Good and Evil.

Re: The Latest From South Africa
Evil is just a remnant of the old ways of thought IMO. It's just a made up concept that holds no realistic bearing IMO.
Just because you think that they are evil for doing what they did, doesn't mean they thought they were doing something evil or even wrong. They were thinking it was fun or something. You see it's all in the person's mind, it's not real.

You don't believe in the Tooth Fairy ?????? I pity you for your shallow empty existance.
I absolutely believe in Good and Evil.
There is no good and evil , but there definately is a tooth fairy .

Well, at the least it's impolite so I apologize if someone's been offended. I was just typing quickly, thought about it for a half second and then typed on.

Sadly, in the history of our planet much more pain and suffering has been caused by people deciding others were "evil because they were different," than has been caused by the compliment of that quote.

It shows what non-sense his comment was. To use your 'they were different' example, are the Nazi's actions not evil because they didn't feel like they were evil?

Actually, I insult my boss/buddy every single day using language that would make you wince. It's when I hear him call a mentally handicapped person a retard (in discussion, not to their face) that I beat on him.

Re: The Latest From South Africa
Haha! Point, BP.
And no, there is no good or evil. There has never been.

It wasn't about Bush or Kerry or Sadam it was about evil. Try and see if you can think of a better example of pure evil on such a scale this century.

Re: The Latest From South Africa
BP didn't have a point. The Nazi thing has to do with ludicrously demonizing your relatively innocous-by-comparison opponent by using the name 'Hitler.'
I was using the Nazi's as an example of 'evil', which in fact, was Jon Stewart's point.

No, point meaning he scored a goal. You know, swish, zing, bam.
I believe Jon Stewart's point was not that they were evil (although he did say Hitler was), but that the usage of that pejorative lessens the seriousness of the Holocaust itself. It's like how a word loses meaning if you say it over and over again.

That wasn't lost on me. For those keeping score, it's still five billion to nil, my lead.

There's a connection. Trivializing the truly evil with idiotic comparisons wasn't what I did.

But you would say that Hitler and Nazis are evil?
