What is the problem of become protectorade?
I am playing as Armenia in 1.2. Egypit attacked me and after a while asked me to become protectorade..... i accepted in change of 10.000 dinars...... they payed and in the next turn i attacked them again with no penalization :dizzy2:!!!!
What is the effects to me to accept become protectorade? None? Just another way (diplomatic exploit) to take money of AI? ~:handball:

Because of the manner in which the AI can be exploited i never break a treaty with them and if i accept protectorate status from an AI faction i abide by the agreement until it ends of natural causes or i get attacked by that faction. In other words self-moderation is the key to making this aspect of the game enjoyable.Never attack allies until they attack you.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
I also seem to recall that breaking the treaty will negatively affect your world reputation and image, making alliances/cease fires/treaties harder to achieve in the future. I have no hard proof of that though.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
I read a treatise on diplomacy somewhere on this site which agrees with you, if you break your word people won't trust you. But if your powerful enough you don't have to keep your word ~D
Like 1 of the quotes on the game says (kind of says atleast) deals with the powerful are worth nothing
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
As Spain I agreed to become a protectorate of Gaul in return for gigantic sums of tribute, a big big lump sum up front, and map information. In return, I allied with them but removed their military access. That secured my fortified Spanish peninsula enough for me to take out the Romans before returning to crush the Gauls.
In short, protectorate harms you in no way. It just makes you stronger.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
Well it seems become an AI protectorade is another diplomatic exploit......
Instead of causing problems to human player.... it beneficts him.... Because AI only propose that when has huge military advantage and is in war with human...... so the alternative is:
- Human refuses and must fight a bloody war against a powefull opponent, or;
- Human accept become under protection of AI, and can ask money for it (AI pays a lot), saving from war, and only have to give to the protector civ the remaining money non spent after each turn...... You just have to spent all your income to don't have nothing to pay....
Become a AI protectorade shoulded be a bad situation to human, not a good thing.... so this is a diplomatic exploit.... My sugestion to CA is that when Human become protectorade, must have half income immediatly to AI without can spent it (like it is now) and AI no offeer money (or offeer to few) to Human accept become protectorade......
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
Diplomats do seem to be a waste of time.
I would like to see a system similar to STW, in that i only issue the order to the diplomat and he either returns with an answer or loses his head.
That was so cooool, and fun. not to mention adding to the atmosphere
of the game.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
Oh, I recently remembered something. When I was playing Scythia I was attacked by Parthia. I was in a bad way because they outnumbered me by more than 5:1 in overall strength and each time I defeated an army they would move up a new fresh stack and I was too poor to buy more HA's and such, on top of that they had Cataphracts...
They proposed protectorate, I took it, but they attacked me the next turn. They were sieging one of my cities at the time so I think if they are sieging you they will attack despite the protectorate status for some reason. Small bug in the AI perhaps.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
Protectorade: is it in you?
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
How do you guys play as these factions?
I mean I beat Armenia in 1.0, and also won the game as the Brutii (The two things needed to play as all playable races) and I can't play as Armenia.
I can't play as Scythia either.
Did patch 1.2 enable playing as these people or is there some secret to unlocking them I don't know about?
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
Hi Horatius,
You just have to replace a texte document. You dan download it here: http://www.twcenter.net/downloads/db/?mod=39
Good Luck playing with Numidia and Senate, that's the biggest challange in 1.2!!!! :charge:

I haven`t become a protectorate in 1.2, but when you become a protectorate you loose most of your treasury and have to pay tributes each turn. That`ll give you a strict economy.
I can`t see how it makes you stronger, but if you insist that it doesn`t harm you then I might try it one day ~
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
Not true Viking, when I became Gaul's protectorate as Spain, not only did I not have to pay anything apart from my treasury that turn (which already run down almost to zero by then, since I empty my treasury every turn), they even paid me heap big heap tribute (2000 a turn for 6 turns, if i recall) and that gave me a HUGE early-game boost since I was already making net 2000+ a turn at that time holding Corduba, Tingi and Numantia. So in turn 12 I was actually making about 4-5k a turn, and up to 6-7 by selling map info. And this with only 7 provinces. I swear to you I felt like Egypt :-P
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
Perhaps some cities should rebel in favour of thier protectorate along with the troops too. You know those cities would feel better protected by thier former protectorate ~D

Well, it`s not the protectorate status in it self that helps you, wich was my point
Also, if you should have alot of money in your treasury all of those will vaporize, so it will vary from player to player whether becoming a protectorate is any good.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
What i would like to know is how to get an AI faction to become a procreate. I had taken every greek city except Perganum (which Pontus took) and Rhodes which i had besieged and they still rejected a procreate even when i offered them sparta, 2000 denarii for 4 turns and 5000 denarii straight up.
Does anyone know how to get an AI to accept a procreate in 1.2?

how to get the ai to "procreate" you says... well um, lets see. some booze, erotic manazines, uh, chocolates, and um, you get the idea.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
You need to offer them more cities than just Sparta.
Re: What is the problem of become protectorade?
They want there original cities back or at least most of them. Ceasefire and then go back to war. You'll get much better terms.
