Rome Total Realism - Marus effect??

I'm playing Rome Total Realism. Got to say I really like this mod but I have one little problem. The senate has decided to outlaw my faction and now I'm at war with them. There has been a cold war for about 15 years because the armies of Rome have Marus units and I do not. I decided to wait to capture Rome until I got the Marus effect so our armies would be on equal footing but it’s just not happening. It’s currently 169BC and no Marus. Do I have to take Rome in order to get the Marus effect? If so thats going to be bloody for me. Also, is there a way to force the Marus effect to happen in my campaign? I control pretty much all of Europe, Greece, Macedonia, North western Africa and part of Brittan. I have around 75 colonies and all my enemies now seem to have advanced units. Thanks in advance.

When you say the Marus effect, I'm assuming that you are talking about the Marius event.

I don't have the Rome Total Realism mod but if it is the same as the standard edition then the Marius event happens when you get a huge city (population 24000+ and with an imperial palace). With 75 provinces I'm suprised you don't have a huge city.

Of course, it might be different in Rome Total Realism.

I would'nt be suprised if I did'nt have a huge city. I've been slaughtering most populations in most cities I take and I have not really been building palaces. If only I had know what you mentioned above! I never really bothered building up the cities because by slaughter I've been able to build a huge treasury. I always figured Marius was a time event.

That would explain it.

Since you only need one huge city, choose one city with a high population growth rate and high loyalty and build up the population. You can do this by lowering the tax rate, building governor buildings, building health buildings to prevent the plague etc..

The Marius event happened really early in my game (Well over a century before it happened in real life) after I captured Carthage and built up its population. I didn't even have time to build a unit of Triarii!

Thank you!! You know I should ask one more question. Is there a way to repair units that have taken casualties? Like a stack that had 82 troops but now due to battle have 40. Retraining does not seem to do anything...

The SPQR army is a pain in the ass to beat in RTR. It took me three full stacks of regular hoplites to get the job done.

Rayven, when you have been retraining units, I'm guessing that you have a blacksmith in the town, but no building capable of creating the units you are trying to retrain. What is happening is that you are simply rearming the damaged unit with better armour/weapons.
To regenerate the unit to its former strength, you need to be able to create that unit in that settlement. For instance, if you are trying to retrain a unit of equites to its former strength, you need a stables in that town. Think of it this way, how can you train more riders to replenish that unit if you dont have the facilities to train riders in the first place?

Use Carthage to get the 24000 people as it grows extremely quickly.
You might have some problems with the loyalty though

Don't worry about the loyalty - it doesn't have to stay a huge city so you can get it then exterminate.

well Rayven1 is using RTR I expect version 5.4.1, he needs the 1.2 patch before installing RTR.

IN the 1.2 patch , for the Marius effect to take place , you need ;

*An imperial palace IN ITALY, meaning that patavium and mendiolanium do also count as correct city's .
*The year has to be 220 BC or later ( say 180 )

I have also never experienced Marius in RTR, and I had over 100 regions and the year was 200 and I had more than 1 palace in Italy, so you might have to just be patient and wait it out

Also at least in RTR 5.4.1 you will never be on equal footing with the SPQR army. They are mostly 3 gold chevron Praetorians....

So the best thing to do is either build a ton of big armies and defeat them through attrition, or wait a long time to get 200k or so and bribe them.

The trouble is that if loyalty gets too low and it rebels, then your soldiers will kill several thousand of the city's citizens, undoing many turns' worth of population growth.

Best to choose a city which is quite loyal (so close to your capital and with no culture penalty)

Even if you can't retrain a unit that is low on men, you don't have to disband it. Just find other units of the same type which have taken casualties, place them in the same army and press 'm' to automatically merge units together into bigger units. That way you reduce the cost and conserve a unit's experience.

Also whole Sicily couts as italy for Palace.

And it needs to be at least 100 turns into the game.
So it's 220BC if starting date is 270BC, don't know how is it in RTR.

Actually, cost will stay the same, since units with lower count will have lower upkeep too.

I don't think Marius is going to happen. Its 147BC, I have a imperial palace in Capua with a pop of 26,000 and still nothing. After you guys took Rome in Rome Total Realism did you get the Marius event? Is there a way to make the Marius event happen by editing a file or something? I think I've gone long enough without it :) .

nm, the event happened in 147BC. I can't retrain my old units to cohorts but with all my cities (110 now) Rome is doomed. Hope they allow me to continue the game after Rome has been crushed. I know the new patch allows me to do that. Hope Rome Total Realism allows me to as well. I have world conquest on my mind and the Parthians and Egyptians have a powerful allience with about 30 cities each.

I was about to ask the question about this but since I only been playing for 30-40 game years I know it's a long way to go. Anyway as I'm playing RTR 54.1. My question is after your pop reach 12,000 shouldn't a new building (for small city) avialable ? I didn't have this playing as a Roman.

So I thought maybe only the capital is possible to become bigger cities and other towns/city have their own limitation. So I change my capital from Capua (which have less population that 12,000) as I always use that city for troops training and change it to Ancona (which have much population) due to many economic building built and trades between The Greeks (which I have thrown out from Italy and concentrate on their war with Macedon instead) and also with dacia which I also have trade agreement.

The question is , is the 12,000 city been scrap ?

a really neat trick if you need population fast is build buttloads of peasants in (your) towns close to your largest city in Italia (if you are not building anything important there) and march them into the town and disband them there, thus giving an instant pop boost (to the city you disband them in)
