Newb questions....

I've started learning about RTW modding lately....
I want to ask you what is a sprite generator?!

Also, where can I find 3DS Max?!

Oh dear.....This thread should be moved shortly, since it's not a Tutorial....

1) What is a sprite generator....it's a bit of software than generates sprites from the 3D units. If the next question is 'what is a sprite' then you are probably not going to be able to use it .... Sprites are used for very long distance viewing in game and are flat 2D 'pictures' of the units. They switch in once you exceed the viewing distance for the lowest detail 3D mesh.

2) 3DS Max is found for sale through the website run my Discreet Software, who make it. They can be found by typing in the word 'google' into your internet and SEARCHING for it. Now...excuse the lack of help here, but it is REALLY annoying how many people ask for help without first using their own brains. Search the net....you will find 3DS Max. If you are asking for links to pirate copies of Max, then you will get no help on ANY respectable forum.

well to support him, there aren't a lot of stickies in this part of the forum, or are there?

How the F*** are we supposed to learn simple modding if we run into people who are far beyond us, unwilling to explain that 3DSMax costs $3000 so perhaps you can start with something more simple....

The only problem is converting it into a workable filetype which is done using an intermediary (spelling?) program. And sunsmountain calm down.

Sunsmountain....let me put it this way....

There is no other tool that will currently produce models for 3DS Max.

Anybody who can't find Max through a search engine has got no chance of coming to grips with a modelling tool. They need to search out tutorials etc. to learn what is a VERY complex piece of software that is really not suitable for beginners.

Assuming he had found out how much the software costs, is unable to get a 'student' copy ( as I did ), and has not considered buying an older version through e-bay...then the only other source is illegal and is not a question that should be asked here.

If the guy just wants to learn to model....well, I suggest he does what I did.

1) Get hold of a cheap bit of modelling software.
2) Learn how to make stuff, UV map it etc.
3) Once he is able to make models he is happy with, find someone to convert them

But....as far as 'teaching' people how to model....well....I don't. I have done in the past, and you have NO IDEA how much hard work it involves. I don't have the time. I am entirely self taught, and did it through a combination of manuals ( they DO tell you what you need to know) and web tutorials ( of which there are HUNDREDS ). It takes months to learn, and years to hone your skill. That takes commitment like you wouldn't believe.

Now...when people who can use the modelling tools want help to make stuff FOR RTW I am happy to help. Have done many times here. I just don't have much patience for those who want to learn to Mod but don't use the SEARCH facility provided by both forums and web. The original questions could EASILY have been covered by a bit of searching.

But what's the point of going to all that effort searching when you can easily clog the guides forum with these questions ~;) But seriously I like to encourage people to model, I am currently trying to teach someone so I know how hard it is but they are quite smart and spend the time exploring so I only have to answer questions rarther than go over every little step with them. That is why I point out g-max, although of course like many people do getting the 30 day trial isn't a bad idea because you can judge if you like modelling. So lets be calm and patient and work with these people even if they are rude and ask the same questions over and over and then try and blame US for there being too many stickies... (oh sorry I'm getting angry again). I think I'm trying to say chill ~:cheers:

Chill....I wish ~;) It's over 30 degrees and stuffy as hell in London, and the heat my PC is kicking out thanks to all the cooling INSIDE means I want to climb in with the motherboard right now ~:)
