Baseball!
Nothing like the tension mounting watching pitch counts, balls and strikes, substitutions, lefty vs lefty match ups, steals, double steals, bases loaded with two out 3-2 counts, shut outs, leaping catches, drunken fans, bitter rivalries, and statistics, statistics, statistics etc.
I see American Football as Rugby for whimps with all that padding they wear, The other football or soccer beats American football by miles IMO.
Rugby is best. Then what you Americans would called soccer. Then cricket.
American football is quite cool. Baseball is awful!
Cricket, seeing as its the ashes at the moment and also it has the decency to go away for half the year unlike football (ie soccer)
American football would be quite a good game if you had never seen rugby (union or league). After rugby its way too stop start. But whatever floats your boat.
I would have voted Cricket, but i hate the fact you americans have stolen our word football, which is a word for a sport involving kicking a ball with your feet and plastered it onto your wussy sport, which is a rip off of rugby, but with all those pads, because your wimps. So i voted for good old British Football, which is the only good football.
Btw, why do you call your sport football when you don't use your feet? That is a complete Oxymoron...
"The other" Football ~D
I Object to you calling it "The other football" seeing as Football/soccer was invented WAY before American football, like 300 years beforeQuote:

Rugby is good stuff. Soccer is good stuff (love that one announcer ~:) ). Football is good stuff for the 50 minutes they're actually playing out of the 180. Love to watch hurling on the rare occasions its on TV.
For me, however, THE sport is Baseball.
BTW, I define baseball as:
played on a grass and dirt field
wooden bats and leather gloves
no designated hitter
perferably no games before 15 april and none after 15 october
SF
The Phils are only 5 games back...DOOM on the Braves.
"Real" football, a.k.a. soccer, is the best of the bunch, but if you want the greatest sport on earth, it's definitely ice hockey.
I'll always prefer the tactics of football over the duels of baseball. Cricket... I just don't understand. And rugby is like football... just without the whole organization thing weighing it down.
Azi
*cough* Canadian Football *cough*
*whine* *squeak* helmets, protective equipment and blah blah blah
Besides, association football is the chosen sport of God.

Nothing comes even close to American football. Its like watching a war for 2 or 3 hours. No other sport has the tactics and strategy of american football . Rugy cant compete with it eother in speed or hard hitting. If american football players didnt wear pads they would kill eachother.
Cant argue with that. NFL also have, in my opinion, the best athetle worldwide. But i enjoy watching the CFL a lot more.Quote:

I suppose it just depends what sports youve always been watching though. One thing to note though is that the rest of the world seems to hold football (as in soccer) in the highest importance, while the US doesnt. The World Cup is THE sporting occasion, probably bigger than the Olympics for a lot of people. But not in the US.
I dout you apprecciate the intricacies of American football or if you even realise whats really going on. Every play is a battle in a war. It has ground attack and air attack and the same on defense. It has everything real war has other than the deaths. Its no wonder many of these guys meet at the end of the game and thank the good lord they didnt get hurt with a prayer.Quote:

I'm trying to think of a war that was like American football.... oh I've got it, the Hundred Years War. Long.
So after each game all the player get on there knees and thank god for not dying, lol, and how can it have air attacks?
The real football of course.
Really? I didn't know he was the father of our saviour ~DQuote:

I don't like to watch Cricket but obviously that's mainly because I have no clue about it.
To really appreciate a sport (and to actually be able to judge whether you like it or not) you usually have to be familiar with the rules and its nuances

I still fail to see your point though, Rugby has all the things you mentioned (well except for air attack, im not totally sure I follow what you meant with that) and more, and it doesnt have the totally infuriating stop/start thing. Its dynamic, fast, relentless and intelligent.
Gotta go with baseball. In the immortal words of Susan Sarandon (as Annie Savoy):
"I believe in the Church of Baseball. I've tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I heard that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring... which makes it like sex."
rugby, then softball.
Here you go the sport of real men

But Rugby is also like an hour and a half long battle. Each man working together. The vanguard -- the scrum -- is battling for the ball, and is the first defence. If the enemy breaks through, then it is up to the rear guard -- everybody else playing -- to stop them getting through to HQ -- a try.Quote:

The commandant told me of once quite recently when someone had an open leg fracture -- the bone was sticking out of the skin.
I think I have quite a good grasp of the game - while I enjoy watching it, in most cases I would probably still prefer a good Football matchQuote:

So I think my connection goes a bit beyond "understanding the rules" - and I'd like to repeat that I tremendously enjoy watching American Football, but in the end it's the traditional Football games I really can get excited about...
