I just got a new computer and installed RTW; seems to run fine, but the cursor is really bugging me. On the options and main menu it is fine, but when I actually start playing the game, there is a delay between when I stop moving my mouse and when the cursor stops moving. It makes it very frustrating and difficult to click on anything.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

same thing happend to me once except im using a 3 year old computer i restarted my computer then after that i shut it down and turned it back on then reincerted the CD the delay problem stopped. I think its a memory bug not sure. But recently another weird bug happend my computer mysteriously restarted when i was playing the game.

I had the problem when I installed RTR 5.4.1 a while back, but to me the mouse delay happened at the main menu too, for me it helped to just reinstall RTR.
In your case try reinstalling RTW, and see if that fixes it.
Or maybe installing the patch might solve it ?

Hurin, have you installed the 1.2 patch? This was a pretty common problem when RTW was first released.
Thanks Screwtype, but yeah, I already installed the patch and rebooted, and the problem is still there.
If anyone can help with this, it seems I'm not the only one who's having this problem. And it is very, very frustrating.

Dont know man, I've had the same problem on one of the two PC's that I play RTW on.
But I think it has somthing to do with your PC spec's, my computer here, its an AMD Athlon 64-bit 3200+, 1GB RAM, ATI Radeon X700 Pro 256MB PCI Express video card, it gets none of the cursor effect.

The other PC, it is an Intel P4 2.6 Ghz, 512MB of RAM, & has a 64MB Intel Integrated PCI video card. It gets the slow cursor everytime, never can be fixed.
So possibly it has to do with your processor, RAM, & video card? Only assessment that I'm getting here, since I shared the similar problem on the slower PC, but not on the much faster one.

I sure hope its not my system, but it actually seems like my system is more like the one of yours that didn't get the bug. It's an Athlon 3400 with 512 RAM and a GeForce FX 5500.

Question I am getting mouse trails all over the screen.
Answer Make sure that you meet the minimum system requirements.
Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.
Set your desktop to a resolution of 800x600, 32 bit True Color.
1) Right-click on your desktop and select Properties.
2) Click the Settings tab.
3) Set your screen area to 800x600.
4) Set the colors to 32 Bit (True Color). Under Windows NT this will be listed as 65554 colors.
5) Click Apply and OK.
All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.
This may be happening because you don’t have the Microsoft® Media Player 9 codec package properly installed. Insert Rome: Total Wars Disk 1 into your CD Drive, when the Auto play splash screen comes up, press on the Extras button and on that next screen you will find a button to install the codec package for you.
Note:This fix will not work for users of Windows® 98 first edition.
If you have Microsoft Media Player 10 installed try uninstalling Media Player 10 and then reinstalling it. Media Player 10 can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...0/default.aspx.

Hurin, don't know if you read this at the .com, but in case you didn't, here it is:
My cursor movement on the campaign map and in battle isn't fluently moving like on the main menu. Its movement is out of time with my hand movement of the mouse.
Anyone know why that is.

If you have mouse acceleration on disable it, it has been the cause for some people. If your mouse has software with acceleration, you can try tinkering with those settings to get the mouse at an acceptable speed.
The most common cause is low fps, any high end DX9 card does not have this problem (that I know of).
If that doesn't work, I suggest you ensure that you aren't mulititasking any programs in the background you don't need. You can use Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up a window showing all running programs, then shut down everything but the essentials, ie systray, explore etc. Also, don't use Zonealarm or an antivirus program while you run the game, and turn off your internet connection. A lot of people have found this to improve the speed of the game in general.
Sorry I can't be of much more help. I'm not a techie, I'm just passing on what I've read elsewhere.

@Hurin, here's another suggestion - a pretty obvious one, but just in case...a lot of folks with nVidia cards had this problem until they updated their video drivers. If you have an nVidia card, then try upgrading to the latest driver. If that doesn't work, try installing the version 75.90 driver.
Don't forget to completely uninstall the current video driver before installing a new one.

I had that problem with a Geforce 5200 FX (77.x detonators). The problem gone when installed a Radeon 9800 Pro.
Certainly a problem, didn't expect such a low performance with the nVidia.
So we have more than one person with similar results, it seems to deal with system performance.
I'm not sure, but what is the FX55 exactly, is it AGP 8x, PCI:Expres 16x? What is its RAM?
Could be the key factor.
And if you add 512MB of RAM (which would be smart in general), it may or may not help as well, but would definatly be better than having just 512MB of RAM.
I belive that 2GB of RAM is the good standard now for gaming.
Ok, I tried disabling the mouse acceleration, but that didn't do it. I'm moving on to the other stuff now. Will keep you updated in case some of you are having the same problem as me.

You could try editing your preferences.txt
from this:

preferences.txt is a text file in the RTW installation directory, usually C:\Program files\Activision\Rome Total War
Somebody correct me if I've got the last bit wrong. Just make a copy of that text file before you start making changes; that way, if anything gets mucked up because of changes to the preferences.txt file, you can restore the older unedited on.

Well, I tried that. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Any other ideas?
This is an age-old PC problem.
1) Turn off v-sync in your display properties
2) If this doesn't help then look for an option like "render frames ahead" and make sure that is set to 0
3) Turn off Anti-Aliasing in your graphics card options and failing that, in the game
and everyone remember the above to combat the dreaded "cursor lag".
edit: I remember that vegetation detail can have an effect on this too.
Ok, before I went messing with v-syn, I updated all my drivers and did all the windows automatic updates. After a full reinstall, the mouse seemed to be better. There is now no delay between when i stop moving the mouse and when the cursor stops moving. Unfortunately, the mouse is now moving torturously slow. The game is more playable, but still far from perfect. Also, and I'm not sure if this is related, but part of the screen (the left side) is cut off, and there is a black band on the right-- it looks like the view has just been shifted askew, slightly to the left. I'm still working on it.
Not sure if this helps any of you having the same problem, but at least the game is playable in this fashion now.
(Any help on the remaining issues would be welcome).

P.S. Where would I find V-sync in my properties, so that I can turn it off?
