Baseball in October
For the few baseball fans here, who do you like this October?
As a few of you know, I'm a pretty die hard Red Sox fan. Currently I'm a bit worried about our pitching and our 4th outfielder going down last night with a ruptured achille's tendon (Gabe Kapler, out for the season and most likely, his career's over).
Anyway, here are the current standings in the American League:
(Edit: I realize my columns look like garbage here, no matter how much I edit them so here's a link to the current standings.)
Al East w l
Boston 85 60
New York 82 62
Toronto 72 73
Baltimore 69 76
Tampa Bay 60 86
Al Cent w l
Chicago 88 56
Cleveland 84 62
Minnesota 75 70
Detroit 66 78
Kansas City 47 96
Al West w l
Los Angeles 81 64
Oakland 80 65
Texas 71 75
Seattle 64 81
And here's the National League. (Boooring.)
NL East w l
Atlanta 83 63
Florida 78 68
Philadelphia 78 68
Washington 75 71
New York 71 74
NL Cent w l
St. Louis 93 54
Houston 77 68
Milwaukee 72 73
Chicago 72 74
Cincinnati 68 77
Pittsburgh 58 87
NL West w l
San Diego 72 73
Los Angeles 66 79
San Francisco 66 79
Arizona 66 80
Colorado 59 86
--------------------------
Okay, so if the play offs ended today we'd have in the American League:
East Boston
Central Chicago
West Anaheim
Wild Card Cleveland
In the National league we'd have:
East Atlanta
Central St Louis
West San Diego
Wild Card Florida
Who do you think will make it? My prediction is pretty much the way the standings are now, except I think Oakland will make it in the AL wild card spot and Houston will make it in the NL wild card.
If your predictions are are spot on come October, I'll reach deep into my proletariat pockets and donate a $100 to a charity of your choice.(Assuming this doesn't violate any org policy [No, nothing like the Dethrone Bush Fund or Gay Rights for Baby Seals Organization. Something fairly reputable, please.])

Re: Gearing up for October
Baseball seemed a very strange sport for me. And in Romania, we rarely had a baseball team. Baseball in my country, is like the medieval period for America.
Anyways, my favourite is Houston. Maybe they'll win some matches, and get a spot in the playoffs.

Re: Gearing up for October
A week ago, I would have agreed about the White Sox, and I still do being a fan, but they are slipping. From 15 games in Division to 4.5 is pretty lame. Maybe they'll scrape by.

Re: Gearing up for October
Aw, man, I thought this was about Oktoberfest.

Re: Gearing up for October
C'mon, freaking Red Sox. I can't believe we've let our lead get down to a half game to the MFYs.
Hopefully it'll go to a tie between the two going into the last series of the season which is a three gamer between the Yanks and Sox at Fenway.
:duel:
Edit-
Through 5 innings tonight:
Papi: 4-4
Manny: 4-4
Trot: 3-4
Tek: 4-4
Man, Trot is really screwing up.

What about the strike booze money fund ~:pimp:
It will be
Boston
Chi sox
Angles
Yanks
Atlanta
St Louis
San Diego
Houston

Re: Baseball in October
It is known:
Boston
Cleveland
Oakland
Wild Card Yankees
(OK that's what I would wish for, but in all honesty ... switch the sox and the yanks. The sox will mess it up again.)
Atlanta
St Louis
San Diego
Wild Card Houston

Re: Gearing up for October
The Sox are gunna beat Cleveland, boy. Just you wait and see, there is hope for Chi.

Re: Gearing up for October
I've never seen a team implode quite as embarassingly as what's been happening with the ChiSox over the last few weeks. Hopefully they'll get it going against the lowly Tigers in the next few days for you guys.
I just left work early to watch game one of Boston's double header today. Am I a sick person? Well worth it, btw. Back to a tie with the MFY's.
Hopefully the O's won't lay down like the worthless dogs they are for the Yankees again like they always do. Anyway, pretty exciting week ahead.

Re: Gearing up for October
GO YANKEES!!! WE WON BEFORE WE WIN AGAIN.
red socks suck big time
and don't start that whole "we beat you last year" thing cause guess what we beat you the year before that and the year before that and the year before thatand the year before that

Re: Gearing up for October
Beating you last year is merely half the story.
Having you suffer the greatest choke in the history of recorded sports is the part I like rewatching over and over and over and over....

Re: Gearing up for October
Prole, I trust you, I nbelieve in you so I ask you this:
baseball, what's the appeal of watching it???
I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying that I don't get it.

Re: Gearing up for October
I see Cardinals vs WhiteSox in the end

You heathen! All kidding aside, what is attraction of cricket or football or rugby for that matter?
Prole, I think I'm going to go home and sacrifice a chicken tonight (for our relief pitching staff). Who would have thought back in May that Foulke going out would be a good thing? God, I just hope El Pappy and Manny can keep swatting it like they have been.
I have a .mpeg of the A-rod karate chop. When times are rough and I just can't seem to enjoy life,I fire it up. Makes me warm and fuzzy all over, every time... :cheesy:
As I told the Yankee fan that I go to the gym with... us lettng the Yankees back in this September was to give them a taste of how it feels to have a division snatched out from under you in the final week. Can't wait to get you bozos in our house in Beantown, MOP. :smash:

It's hard to explain, but I love watching pitch counts, looking at statistical splits, the strategies for substitutions, etc. I also love the historical aspects (comparing modern day guys to Babe Ruth, etc).
It just seems alot more cerebral over all than the NFL or soccer...
I'll never try to convince someone how interesting it can be, I remember how boring it used to be for me. But one day the stats started making sense and I was hooked.

Have you got a chance to watch Paplebon or Hansen pitch? I love watching these guys my age and younger pitching 95 mph in relief. Hopefully they'll carry us through.
Huge games tonight for both the Yankees and Sox... This is that time of year when I can feel my hair greying with each twist and turn of the standings between these two teams.

Re: Gearing up for October
well, i just bought some hacker-pschorr "original oktoberfest" marzen. that's as geared-up as i'm probably going to get. though seeing as i'm living in and/or around cleveland, atm, i guess i'm subconsciously pulling for the indians. from watching sportscenter and such, i have the impression that they are involved in the playoff race in some respect. yay and all that.
marzen.

If you're right AggonyKing I will cry with joy, then will not be able to speak to me girlfriend for a month
The implosion is embarrassing but I'd rather play bad in September than play bad in October. Besides Cleveland was playing .750 ball, you can't keep that up, there's laws against it 35 of the 48 contiguous states

Re: Gearing up for October
It doesn't matter. The question arround here is when will the Royals break their single season loss record (that they set last year)
It also doesnt help having to watch the Chiefs get dismantled on national television. I need to be on suicide watch.
-
Re: Gearing up for October
cricket?football?
no good to watch, just to play.
Rugby though is fun, exciting and unpredictable to watch.
I imagine you could say the same about baseball but I don't really get it yet. I understand the enjoyment of playng it just not that of watching it.
Other than the tradition, camaraderie and such that goes with any sport I must admit that my ability to comprehend the enjoyment of baseball is low.

Re: Gearing up for October
Tests? Whoopee! I can't wait! Get that first test out of the way, smoke them, and then relax until the next ones arrive. (No, I'm not usually this arrogant but this semester my classes are easy [perk of being a 5th year].)
Oh wait... Baseball? That is still being played? I thought Selig had tucked his tail between his legs and slunk back under that rock with Steinbrenner to hide until everyone is forced to care about the Yankees and who-cares play the world series in December.

You seem to have it down ~ , excellent picks. I've been a Phillies
fan since the early 70's :embarassed: and I know they will somehow crumble
at the worst possible moment. Oh well, we will end the Braves streak next
yr.......maybe.

Don't worry, they'll get there. I wonder if the rest of MLB will call for mercy and just consume the different parts of the Royals 'organization' (why does that seem like a farcial name to me?). The Royals are the MLB equivalent of Baylor (college football) or the Cardinals (NFL... yuck).

Hrm...I give up one baseball. All the good teams suck.
