Berserkers are where again?
When I finish my current campaign with the British on Expert with Huge Units, I would like to play with a new campaign. Because I used Berserkers in the Viking Era, I would like to also try them in the MTW part.
So, what faction can produce them and how?
Also, I heard of a Sherwood Forester, what is that and how do I get one.

Re: Berserkers are where again?
I've only ever seen Sherwood foresters as part of a rebellion and only ever in Mercia:-

Beserkers are similar I think. Only coming from rebellions and most likely only in Norway, Sweden and maybe Denmark.

Crap, so I can't build or buy them then. I don't feel like Masterminding a rebellion for a chance to get a unit that I want. Odds are I would see nothing but Ballistas anyways.

I think you can produce both Bersekers and Sherwood foresters. Open crusades_unit_prod11.txt with Gnome editor and find rows for them (151 for bers, 170 for SF). In the 17th column just write which buildings are required for producing them. Also, go to the 50th column and write there which factions can produce them (if the field is empty it means all factions can). In the 51st column you can edit provinces where you can produce units.
Hope it will help.

ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT, I will play my next game with your mod. What other improvements does it give?

Re: Berserkers are where again?
LOL, talk about spam...
it offers better balance, faction focused rosters (using VI units in MTW), improved (more or less) AI, more units in crusades, all factions playable and a zillion minor things I can't remember right now... the beta2 thread offers a good view of it...

Cool, I will try it.

Re: Berserkers are where again?
Um, is it the one in your thread - if not, where do I get it. Also, we are getting off topic. Any other ways of getting those two units?

Re: Berserkers are where again?
You can get the mod from my signature...
Anyways, the easiest way to get the units is to grab GNOME and unlock them via prod files editing, it's really 5 minutes work...

Sure, trying to talk me OUT of using your mod, glad you don't sell vacuums. Anyways, I will try it. I didn't like the Medmod much. Even know that sometimes I would play an unmodded game with it installed, it changed even the regular versions' units names to the modded names and drove me nuts.

Re: Berserkers are where again?
Well, the medmod approach is a bit extreme...
I used it a bit in reverse, so that since most factions doesn't have a totally winning roster (read: they have at least a weakness that needs foreign units... in other words: you've got all the tools but some aren't sharp) you have to go for certain territories to get good quality complements... Works nicely as the AI uses the valour bonuses in an intelligent way in most cases...

Re: Berserkers are where again?
You should be able to get Sherwood Foresters and Beserks in vanilla with crusades. I got two units of Saxon Huscarles that way. The Egyptions didn't know what hit them.

They shouldn't be spawned by crusades AFAIK, as I had to add them to the crusader roster in my MOD...

A crusade generates whatever units can be created in that province, and that includes rebel ones. If you let a crusade hang around in Norway, you will probably get berserkers if zeal is high and you are patient.

Re: Berserkers are where again?
AFAIK, you need to set (crusade x) in the rebellions column to have any chance a unit will appear with a crusade walking in some places, while (crusade -x) will add the chance of being "recruitable" when you launch a crusade.
If that wasn't true you could have been able to get hortodox and muslim units in crusades.

Well, I have seen plenty of Saxon Huscarles in English crusades, so there is obviously something going on. Is there also a (jihad x) command?
(Sorry, haven't got M:TW installed on this computer so I cannot check with gnome.)

Are you sure you've been playing unmodded MTW? I've never seen huscarles in English crusades...
And yes, there's a (jihad x) command too for muslim units.

I play MedMod v2.14, but it is not supposed to change the crusade roster. It does make crusades more expensive, giving you a better chance of recruiting expensive units, so perhaps that causes it. I'll check when I get back to my other computer.

Re: Berserkers are where again?
I think WesW is the right person to ask to...
BTW, the chances of getting expensive units with a crusade are related to the king's piety rather than the crusade's price IIRC.

The readme doesn't mention it.

Could well be true, I have been very confused lately :dizzy2: .

Re: Berserkers are where again?
I've seen Saxon Huscarles in crusades when I've played unmodded VI 2.01. Also in my last game, an English crusade passing through HRE land in Burgundy gained three units of Gothic Knights, and that was just because they passed through German land.
I think Ludens is right in that crusades do generate any unit available in the province they pass through, as long as the units are Catholic. This is set in the units file in the field where you specify what kind of situations the unit emerges in (e.g. "Catholic zealots", "Catholic rebellions", "Catholic bandits" etc.) Therefore Orthodox units don't appear in the crusades.
Sometimes trickles of Orthodox units from an Orthodox faction's stacks will join a crusade if the province held by the Orthodox faction is mainly Catholic and has high zeal, and if the units have low loyalty.

Re: Berserkers are where again?
I just downloaded the latest version of Gnome...is it just me or does this not come with an .exe?

I'm pretty sure that when a crusade passes through an orthodox held territory with a high % of catholics that the units you get are not from the stacks in that region, but from the general population, ie the higher the zeal the more you get, but doesnt take any of the orthodox stacks. Can anyone confirm this?

Really? I never seem to get anything but fanatics, even in my French campaign where I had a "zealous" dynasty, 3-4 kings in a row with max piety.
Still 1200 plus fanatics with a 4* fanatic general kicks a certain amount of ass all on it's own!
This is just conjecture, but when moving my own crusade through my own interiour, say playing HRE, I take all my own men out of the province as the Crusade moves in, and where piety is high, men still appear in the crusade.
Now the thing is, men appear in the Crusade that never spawn in the marker from day one, so you suck up arbs, Chiv knights etc.
Maybe there are two lists operating, one that determines what will be placed in the Crusade and one that determines what the Crusade will suck up going when passing through the Catholic population?

The thing is, I could've sworn I've had Orth units in a Crusade, and I'm not one to be bribing the Byzants, so them being sucked up is the only way I can think they got in. I had a unit of Katanks once that ran up a stupid amount of valour. Or so I remember, this was a month or more ago
