Languages

I'm a linguistics freak. I love to "hear" it in any and every language.. My topic is about which language do you like hearing although you may not know a single word of it. Or maybe a language you already know which also you love speaking as well..

Personally, I adore the phonetics of Arabic. One of the richest languages existing which sound like a mystic series of sounds after another. I'd recommend anyone hearing the morning "ezan" (= call to prayer) which is sung by dawn from minarets. If the "muezzin" (= "ezan" caller) has a good voice, you don't want it to end. I also love the Arabic parts of pop songs, which is something they sometimes involve (Sting feat. Cheb Mami - Desert Rose). M:TW had some very incredible Arabic screams both in the soundtrack and within the battle. Arabic is a really way to express yourself.

I like Spanish and Japanese much as well. The emphasize the Japanese put when speaking sounds really interesting. Spanish has a "punk" way of sounding. I love it as well..

And English.. The reason why they call me "British Kemal", I think. I really like the language and the guy. He was a great Turkish spy once who could not be distinguished from the original British with his appearance and brilliant use of English language.. English is a language that sounds truly "aesthetic" - "carved" for your ears.

I read Turkish sounding like a softer version of Persian. Some said it even sounded like Korean, Japanese or Native American..Well, to me, it has a moderate sound between harsh and mediocre..

I've always loved to hear Latin spoken; Arabic also sounds great.

Hmmm... Germans say Dutch sounds like someone's speaking from his lower abdomen or something... so not really a nice language, probably... (although I find Middle Dutch highly amusing...but that's of course only for reading)

I would like to learn Arab one day though (tried it, but dropped out due to laziness), but personally I would already be glad if I finally learned to speak French fluently.

Oh, and I would very much like to learn to say ugly words and insults in Russian. When a friend of me and myself went to pick up another friend in Oxford, it once again occured to us how nice it is to say what you think of people without them understanding it (Dutch is perfect for that goal), but of course that doesn't really work in the Netherlands, so we think Russian would be a nice alternative... It sounds really cool anyway.

I like to hear Latin...very powerful.
I'm am fast getting sick of french, as i am taking it for my GCSE exams (Uk guys may sympathise with me) but i agree, coming from a good womans lips....

Welsh is one of the most wonderful and expressive languages ever created, every sentence sounds like a poem or a song. I love watching the eisteddfods on S4C, even though I actually understand very little Welsh, just to listen to the sheer beauty of it being spoken or sang (despite the fact a lot of the acts are really quite shockingly awful).

English spoken with received pronunciation is very nice too (which is how I speak it, hoorah!), and is very good for wooing foreign girls. If spoken with certain accents though: Estuary, Cockney and Northern (inc. Midlands) for example, it sounds absolutely horrific, same goes for if the regional accents of the West Country, Scotland and Wales aren't spoken well.

Despite their bad reviews here, I actually quite like German and Dutch and the like as well. They're much nicer than the nasal, slurred languages of around the Mediterranean.

German gets a minus from me as well, I do not like the grammar, the phonetics, the words. Pugh !

I enjoy listening Russian, Latin, Japanese, and - sometimes - Arab (I'd say that arab talked by a woman sounds much better than talked by a man, a few cases excepted. But then, most arab I hear is from TV shows about terrorism).
I've never heard an Indian speaking, but from the few indian songs I've heard, it sounds pretty nice too.

I had a conversation with a Modern Languages professor the other day. He and I argued about whether "Sel-tik" was a proper pronunciation of the word 'Celtic'. I, of course, hate that mispronunciation.

English is regularly butchered by just about everyone in my continent. The only time I hear it spoken properly is by the few Englishmen I ever see on TV. I know the language...might as well speak it right.

Gaelic and German are nice to hear. I know what you mean about Arabic, LeftEyeNine, in singing cases. There's are a really great sample of it on the first Nile album...the song because a vicious wail. It's supposed to be a Djinni, you see; I really love that part of the song.

I like Arabic too, though regarding morning prayer, sometimes I wouldn’t mind pushing the man out of his little tower (~;)). Singing in Arabic however, or reading poetry, that’s amazing. Even if my Arabic skill are somewhat lacking.

Speaking of lacking… my mother tongue, I don’t really speak it with my Iranian friends, nor my family, I’m afraid I’ll lose it. And that would be unbearable, because Fârsi is a great language, especially for poetry, ey Irân ey marze por gohar, ey khâkat sar chešmehye honar, dur az to andišehye badân, pâyandehe mâni to jâvedân… and there is nothing more beautiful than Iranian names.

For western languages, I like Spanish and French. Women speaking Spanish is almost as much a turn-on as women speaking Fârsi. :heart:

Its fun to yell at people in Russian... ~D

DON'T lose your mother tongue. Preserve it at all cost. It's too precious and beautiful a language to lose, when others (like myself) are aching to learn it.

I like to hear Latin and Russian. The Russian languge intriques me, just the alphabetand how they pronounce stuff. The alphabet looks like english mixed with leet speak ~D

The best is english, I like "epic" and fantastic tales or songs told in english. Then it comes any arabic and latin also.

Japanese as spoken by a 20-year-old woman with a high voice.

If you shop around Japan, you get to hear similar voices telling you the door of the elevator is closing, the truck is backing up, or you are welcome in the store.

Fortunately, I work in an ESL school, so I am surrounded by vocal (and visual) beauty.

I'm just fascinated by sounds and dialects as well. Frankly I'm happy listening to and discerning the varying patterns and sounds coming from people I meet and talk to every day in St Louis, and imagining why they talk that way or where they come from. Foreign accents are even more fun.

Any foreign language for me is pretty fun to listen to, as well. And I for one like the way German sounds ~;)

Dariush, you must strive to keep Persian alive, even Ottomans used it as the official language.

I have a weakness for Arabic and Oriental languages. They are beautiful, though my parents say I'm weird.

Well I trully, really adore the sound of ancient hellenic. Not just cause im Hellenas (yes i admit it plays a big part) but also for the clarity of the words the musicality of it. Especially the Homeric age dialect. Reading Iliad from the prototype its just music to my ears. The sound of those compact words that need 3 or 4 words in other languages to be translated is magical. Ok enough with my delirioum ~:) . I also like Italian very much and especially from south Italy. Its like singing while talking. Im also fond of Russian. I have several friends in east Ukraine and i found it quite easy to learn enough on the small periods i was there.

I ve heard few times Welsh and gaelic and i really think that they sound great. I find for some strange reason that they make me feel the same way like when i hear archaic greek. I know there is not much relation but acoustically they sound distand but familiar the same time.

About German Dutch ( i ve listen too much) and things like that sorry to the fellow patrons but they sound to me like tearing papers or chewing them.

Norwegian and scandinavian in general sound to me like tape being played backwards ~:)

About Arabic it depends from the speaker. I tend to like those with a bit french accent.

The most antiaesthetic language to my ears is Hebrew. Sounds like spitting each other.

Have you heard Norwegian in song? I rather like it.

Norwegian is so similar to danish and swedish, that I'd be surprised if an outside can tell the difference.

I like to hear dutch, it's so crude - yet so different and melodic ~;)
