I usually play England and sometimes I raise mercs to make up for manpower deficiencies. Anyways I fought this one major battle with about 3,000 men per side (several stacks into the region) with a sizable number of mercenaries and two of my most powerful lords, William Marshal and John Mercadier. Anyways, after the battle (the option tidy up the battle afterwards was on!) Marshal and Mercadier suddenly showed up as 'mercenary generals' - they were good home-raised troops initially. I think the game scrambles w/c ones are mercs and w/c aren't just as long as they come up with the right number of mercs and non-mercs units. The other problem here was mercs can't be rebuilt and these two guys were two of my best and I wanted to keep them alive. Make matters worse they were both previously governors of provinces and now I can't take the governorship away from them to give it to anyone else.
