I heard people say that with a heavy cavalry, you could charge at units and actually go through them and charge again on their back. How does that work? Whenever I right click, they just charge at the enemy, and stop and go into melee. If I try to click on the ground behind the enemy, the cavalry don't attack and basically gets poked bunch of times.
So how do you charge through units?
If you want to punch through the enemy unit you have to be select about what type of cavalry you use. It simply has to be heavy (good push). But you also don't want to try this against spears or very strong heavy infantry (do don't try this against Comitatenses or similar). They will halt the cavalry easily enough. Deep formations are to be avoided too (all units in horde formation for instance).Quote:

You cavalry won't kill much but it will punch through to the other side. But as you might have noted there aren't that many enemy units that fit the bill.
Nice, easy tactic i use for killing off small to medium sized armies or rebels (or when I am top heavy with Cav), and I want the enemy to rout quick.
1. Formation.. archers, skirmishers in front, infantry and Cav behind.
2. Advance all units on slow march, with missile units set on FAW
3. Keep pushing and blitzing with your missile units.
The enemy will hate this, and seek to counter. They'll break guard formation and start to run towards or away from you.
4. The second they start to run, right click (double click) all Cav Units behind the advancing enemy.
5. Cav will rush past your missile units and charge through the rapidly advancing enemy. This shock tactic will cause most of them to rout.
6. Send your infantry in to surround from behind and kill them all.
Warning though, if you are facing experienced spearmen, its best not to attempt this unless you have experienced heavy Cav or even better, Cataphracts.
This works for me very well. During deployment, I place half of my cavalry as far to the left and right as I can get them. On "Start Battle", I send them at a gallop to where on a clock, the enemy is at the center, my infantry and archers are at 6 o'clock, and my cavalry goes to 10 and 2. They are usually not noticed by the AI. I have all infantry, archers and skirmishers advance at a walk on fire at will.Quote:
