.
Register independent. That isn't a political party.
edit:
I would change redistricting laws in California. Oops. Already tried. Prop 77 got killed.

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
But then you can't vote in the primaries.~:mecry:

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be

The senate

The Governor General and all the Leftenant governors.

But why should you allowed to vote on which candidate a party nominates if you are not affiliated to this party?
Seems a bit strange that Democrats should have a say in who runs for the Republicans and vice versa...
EDIT: One thing I would change (and I still hope that this might actually change in the coming years) - bundle the election dates for the federal parliament and the parliaments of the individual states in Germany, so that there are only e.g., 2 big election dates in a 4-year period.
As it is now there is almost always some election campaign going on on either federal level or in one of the states and the politicians seem too afraid of messing up any of these election, so that they are less willing to make unpopular decisions.

Yeahhh, now you're sorry your ancestors dumped all that tea...Well, we told you so.
If I could change anything, I'd make being a politician illegal & punishable by something seriously, seriously nasty. Give politics back to the land owning aristocracy!

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
I would like to be able to vote on more things (local stuff mostly). And I would like it if there were some way to qualify voters, just to make it so idiots can’t vote. ~:)

restore the Upper House to its former glory, including restoring the right of hereditary peers to a seat in the House of Lords, allowing the Queen to appoint Lords, Ministers of State, Officers of State, and other now Government-appointed posts, including the Governor-Generals of the Dominions and the Secretary-General of the British Commonwealth of Nations...

One wee little point here, why the house of lords? What makes the hereditary peers better then anyone else?
I'd change everything to a flat tax...that'd make everything much simpler

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
Why perhaps one should not ask why, but why reform it in the first place. The House of Lords used to (and still slightly is) not be about politicking. The parties would not make jibes at each other like in the House of Commons, speeches would be calm, collected, not emphatic, or filled with meaningless statistics. They would do their job -- scrutinise legislation -- instead of bickering like a bunch of school girls. Restoring the hereditary peers is simply undoing the reforms. And besides, it is a nice quirk of a nation if one is granted a seat in parliament simply by birth right.

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
First of all, dump the entire administration, especially Verdonk. I hate that ugly, compuslive lying hack.
Seriously though, I'd give the 2nd chamber of our parliament more power to force her decisions on pig headed ministers. And maybe some obscure legislature that would prevent Wouter Bos from ever becoming prime minister.

Ah, Wouter Bos, the boyscout of Dutch politics. He was over at my school before the last elections, and failed to answer questions from schoolkids in a satisfactory manner. And he's supposed to be prime minister some day?
The current government is horrible. I've rarely seen so many mess-ups by such a group of incompetents. It would almost be laughable, were it not that they're supposed to be running this country. It's a sorry state of affairs, but won't change until the electorate actually starts to care.

Well when I said I'd like to change the office of Governor General I mean't 1 of the following.
1.Abolish it all together and turn Canada into a Kingdom with HRH Elizabeth II as our Queen.
2.Again turf the office of Governor general and draft one of Lizzies many kids to be the Prince regent of Canada.

The existence.

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure I would prefer a parliamentary system.
Maybe people living under parliaments can enlighten me.
-
Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
I would eliminate the Electoral College
-
Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
more power to the provinces.
cut the beurocracy in half.
... kick the primeminister in the nuts...

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
get rid of the house of lords.
replace it with a Proportionally representative body.
Their role would be similar to the current House of lords, in that they could revise, change, delay and modify, but not entirely kill legislation.

Sorry if I sound a bit pigheaded mate but why have it at all? Ok, I understand the tradition part and yes, it is a nice quirk. But what happens when you get an unelected idiot (we have enough elected ones already) or better still a whole bunch of incompetant unelected idiots in the house of lords? And I'm not sure their birthright makes them any better at not squabbling like little girls. Though not having to fight for a seat makes you a better campaigner as you have nothing to lose...

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
I would change their mentality.
Adding more rules does not automatically solve the problem.

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
Why is any one pro monarchy....how could any one want some inbred guy with 11 toes to rule you?
I am always left shaking my head after a pro monarch post here.~

Re: If you could change one thing about your government...what would it be
Why is anyone anti-monarchy, or pro-republic ... how could anyone want a retarded man to rule them, especially if he won an election with 500,000 less votes than the other guy, or can appoint a prime minister outwith parliament.
I'm always left shaking my head after an anti-monarchist posts here.
