I'm sure I've seen a couple of posts on what type of issues cause what kind of problems re CTD, back-to-menu etc. Can't find it though :(
What issues would cause a CTD right at the end of the loading bar just as the game is about to open the campaign map? I've removed all the units from the campaign (and DMB and EDU) apart from those left in the descr_strat file. Rebels seem not to be the problem or mercs. What else would be affected by removal of cas/texture/dmb & edu entries?

Have you edited provinces and/or names ? I think you already catched the other topic on this issue, but they are common reasons for CTD right at the start.

Provinces are indeed edited and fully working before the CTD, so it is not them. Names have not been touched, nor ancillaries. Something is probably trying to reference some EDU/DMB entries I removed.
Hum, I heard there are CTD issues when you add new buildings with BI and 1.3. I think you already know it, but well, in case you don't look for a topic started by [CF]Aderbhal (sp?) on this problem.
Yes, I've heard about it though have not experienced it when I added a totally new building.
Anyway, the error has been tracked down - I had deleted the naval pirate vessels from EDU and pirates (in the rebels file) cannot be deleted (as far as I know). This was most short-sighted of me ;)
