Scratched Disc, this possible?

Okay, after many attempts and trying different drives and computers, I now know the scratch I can see on my Disc I is stopping the installation at the same spot everytime. I tried copying the files to desktop to do a desktop install, and everything was fine and well, except I managed to locate the 2 files that the scratch is not allowing me to retrieve.

Now, I dont want to ask for cd-keys, hacks, anything like that.

I was just curious if anyone knows of a site...or if its possible to have the 2 files hosted anywhere so that I may download ONLY those two files. (This is for Medieval: Total War, btw).

Those files would be (on the offchance its possible, and I feel I'll be told no one can do it, but I figured I'd ask) --

I once had a scratched game, but I looked on a site how to fix it and it worked perfectly.

First thing, buy some pledge.

Next spray it all over your CD then wipe it off, from what I read the wax soaks into the cracks and is clear enough for you computer to read.

I couldnt play RTW or MTW until I fiqured this out :)

I'm not sure I'd want to use it on a PC game, but there's always the 'Toothpaste' trick for curing minor CD scratches. A tiny bit of white toothpaste on a smooth cloth, wiped from centre of the CD to the outside can sometimes make a previously unreadable CD work... although it's not a definite solution. I've used it on a couple of music CDs in the past and a Playstation game and it solved the problems I had with them. Apparently Brasso is better yet.

I wouldnt advise the use of abrasive or chemical substances to be used on yout cd's.

You can get a cd cloning utility, If the scratch is not to bad the image maker "clone cd" for example,
can make your copy cd readable where the origional was damaged,
You would still need the origional cd to play.
Its not guaranteed to work. Depends on how big the scratches are,

but i think cleaning the cd with Brasso will render its waranty obsolete.

Unless the disk is new, I doubt very much a warranty on used and worn disk counts for much, if at all.

Here's a piece of software that shows where on a disk the problems are, plus can attempt to recover data on the disk that might otherwise be lost.

Dvdisaster is currently running...so far it reports that all of the disc is damaged (while I know that cant be completely right since its ONLY those two files I cant retrieve from the disc itself).

I have a fear I'll be back to asking if its possible to transfer those two over AIM or even by email, thanks either way ya'll!

I don't see why a fine abrasive would cause a problem. You're going to wash it off and dry the disc when you're done. I've buffed out scratches on CD's and DVD's, but it takes a lot of buffing to do it. You can speed this up by using a coarser abrasive first and then switching to finer abrasives as you go. You can buy these abrasive powders and mix them with water to make a paste.

I've never tried chemicals that fill in the scratches. The devices I've looked at which claim to be able to repair scratched discs are all too expensive. You might as well just buy a new copy of the disc. MTW only cost about $10 now.

Okay, Dvdisaster completed, showing somewhere around the first 8093 being damaged....did it again and it was down to 7000ish.

I'm unable to create an error file because of this section (so it refuses to be able to fix it =\)

Will keep workin on it and see what else I cant come up with

i hav the same problem with my mtw disc 1. the only way i could install mtw again was to put disc 1 in my cd burner and it seemed to install properly. just doesnt seem to like any other cd-rom drives just likes cd burners.

Theres never any harm trying to dry polish out a scratch, I remeber an old black PS1 disc (ridge racer i think) that was scratched to buggery. I picked out a old (100%) cotton t-shirt and buffed till my arm dropped off. It worked a treat. This is essentially what the CD repair kits do, buff the thing up.

Examine your scratched CD by looking closely at the bottom (non-label) side of your disc, with a bright light directly behind the disc. Hold disc about three to four inches from your eye, and look through the disc surface to verify that there are no pinholes or scratches which perforate the digital wafer (the metal piece inside of your disc.) If this metal wafer has been scratched through, you have lost digital ones and zeros embedded on the wafer, and that disc cannot be permanently repaired. Fortunately, a scratch through this wafer is extremely rare. If your disc clears this test, it can be completely repaired

Lol Im just saying... I dont think its a good idea to use brasso on your cd's.....

Im unshure which files you need but i can probably send them if it gets that desperate.
