Im off to lapland for Christmas
Each years we try and do something a little better for my daughter, this years its lapland( dont know how we will get better than this though) , she is currently 5 1/2 and these are special times as she still believes.
Has anybody else been as I not sure what to expect, except its going to be very cold.
I will post a few pictures on my return. If I dont speak to you all before the day , Im wishing you all a very Happy Christmas.

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Wow lapland - a great place. But in the winter it's not so nice - too unfriendly, harsh weather. You should bring a fishing pole and go ice fishing

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Have a nice trip in Lappland Shadeswolf! Btw where are you guys staying there?Lappland is a big area and has lots of very different activities. If nothing else try the traditional Saami food like Poronkäristys = Reindeer stew or local fish dishes. I hope you enjoy the experience.:san_smiley:
Edit: And becouse you have the little one with you,i suggest you visit the Santa Park in Rovaniemi.

Nah, it's unfriendly during the summer - the notorious Lappish mosquitoes, you see. In winter it's just cold. And snowy. Possibly windy.
Have fun in Lapland, ShadesWolf :san_smiley:

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Try to learn & decipher the Barbarian tongue they speak there :san_laugh: (j/k to all the Finns here :san_cheesy: ), but seriously, brushing up on a bit of Finnish isn't a bad idea to communicate with the natives. Try the BBC Language website. :san_cheesy:

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Do you mean Saami or Suomi, SilverKnight?
-
Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
AFAIK Lappland is still in Sweden :san_tongue:
Pack warmly and see if you can find a nice dogsleed to ride in :san_cheesy:

Finland got a region known as Lapland (Lappi) too. Considering the age of ShadesWolf's daughter I'm guessing it's the Finnish side. :san_wink:

Parts of the population is Saami yes. Laps is an older word for Saami. Lapland can refer to the entire area were Saami have traditionally lived too.
SilverKnight, Saami (spoken by the Saami) and Suomi (Finnish) is two different languages. :san_tongue:
I'm guessing that it was Suomi you were refering to.

Sv: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Best greetings from the only Saami on the .org
Better than Lappland is to say Sapmi as we Saamis say ourselves.
Not sure of which country you are going to since Sapmi stretches
from Norway, Sweden, Finland all the way to Russia. Anyway you
should try the dried reindeer's tongue in a hot cup of coffee :san_wink:

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
OK im back, Hope u all had a nice christmas. Lapland was excellent. It suprised me how quick it got dark and how the temp dropped after dusk, Only about 4-6 hours of daylight. I couldnt believe how well organised it was and how friendly the people were. All spoke excellent English which really surprised me.
Anyway some pictures as promised

~;p Those yellow vests you can see on the first picture have Villi Pohjola-logo on them. So they must have been in finnish side.

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Yes we were on the finnish side.

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Blast!... oh well, good to hear you had a good time! :winkg:

Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
Looks like you had a good time. The snow looks great, too. I wish it snowed like that more often here.
-
Re: Im off to lapland for Christmas
The snow was excellent, Ive never seen quite so much of it. While we were there it was constant, and the Fins just get on with their daily life and ignore it. It was strange coming back to the UK and having none here, and knowing what happens when we recieve a few inches.
