Diplomat mission succeed status

Looking through the traits, I noticed spies and diplomats get a bump in stats for every mission succeeded.

What constitutes mission succeed for diplomats? Does it mean that any sort of deal (or just a cheerful goodbye w/o any deal) is enough for success even if its just a map exchange?

Also I hadn't realised that bad diplomat trait will be increased for failures. Again what constitutes a failure? No deal or a bad parting like 'bandying words is a waste of time' etc.

I just found out that my diplomat lost a good trait (most probably from an anti-trait). Probably from having too many unsuccessful encounters.

Good question and one of the reasons I went back from 1.3 to 1.2 again, in 1.2 diplomats can only get better.

I suppose any kind of deal (get the other side to agree) is a sucess, anything else a failure. At least, that would explain why my 1.3 diplomats went down south stat-wise so quickly.

I seem to have had stat changes due to any old deal. If they accept your proposal, it gives you a chance of gaining. But I like the feature of losing traits due to diplomacy being rejected.
It used to be a no lose gamble, now it's much better. There is an element of risk involved.

In the abstract, I even agree with you, it´s just that the diplomacy in RTW is a bit weird. For example, I asked my protectorate for map info, I was even making a counter-offer and not the good old and proven "or else...", and they cancelled the treaty :dizzy2:

Element of risk? Its unfair when diplomats lose positive traits because I don't feel like paying tribute for map info or trade and rightly so. My starting 4 star diplomat became a no-star dunce rapidly.

Is it possible in anyway way to change traits without starting over the campaign?

Yes.

You just need to edit the export_descr_character_traits.txt file. Find the references to your agents and edit the chances of picking up a bad trait. Or find a knowledgeable person to do it for you.

I was previously under the impression that editing descr files necessitated restarting a campaign all over from scratch.

What I don't know, does the influence of your diplomate really matter? Same goes for your generals in negoitations, does it matter? If does, well the 12 influence generals you get as romans is a very huge over-powering thing to you..

Influence of diplomats does matter, it gives your proposal a higher chance of being accepted due to your negotiating talents.
