Do not be afraid of the black man !

So I was walking through a shopping street this afternoon, minding my own business, when I noticed this black guy in the middle of the road (pedestrian street) looking at the crowd. I, of course, immediately knew what was going to follow, I was heading straight towards him and he had noticed that I had noticed him. So when i come close he walks up to. (note; the conversation happened in Dutch)

"You are not afraid of the black man are you ?"

"Of course not"

He extends his hand, I shake it, he goes into one of those cool handshakes, I follow jus to be polite.

"Hakuna Matata" He says, and i immediately wonder whether he knows Swahili that hasn't been used in a disney movie.

Anyway, I'll shorten my story, he hands me some booklets about Africa (pushes them in my hands) and asks me to buy them to support his studies and to support Africa (I never figured out for what is was supposed to be). He also claimed to just know a little Dutch, while the only thing that seemed bad about his dutch was his inconsistent 'foreigner' accent. I politely say I'm not interested, I actually said this before he pushed these booklets in my hands because I knew what was coming. And then he says

"Don't be a racist"

I'm a racist for not buying a couple of lousy overpriced booklets from a random guy on the street ???? :furious3: This is probably the most pushy guy I ever met trying to sell those things. Anyway, I got a bit pissed of and practically shoved those booklets back into his hands. he was of course reluctant to accept them again, I finally succeeded in giving them back, he probably called me a racist a couple of times during that, I don't really remember the details, and I walk away.

Now I don't really have a problem with people trying to sell me stuff on the street (well, as long as there aren't too many of them), but do they have to be so damn pushy and do they have to pull the racist card everytime ? Every single one I've met has started the conversation with the sentence "Don't be afraid of the black man". Do they have a training center somewhere ? Someone has to be printing those books in mass quantities. And why do they have to pretend to be 'African' ? I'm willing to bet that guy has never been to the black continent in his life.

I guess there's not really a point in this post, I just felt like ranting :oops:

I would have just said "no, I'm not scared of the black man," as I walked past him. I can't stand to give my time to beggars and those pushy street salsemen/pamphleteers. That or I don't even bother to answer; I'm not a big fan of the people that push politics and that stuff on you in public.

Well, I don't really take it personally, I knew I wasn't going to buy anything. But I've seen people cave and spend their money on those stupid booklets, it just annoys me that they're playing the guilt trip thing.

If I were to post every incident of white retardedness and racism that I encoutered...

Hmm, someone tried to guilt-trip me about the Israel/Palestine thing today - he was trying to convince me to vote for a chap called Pilger for rectorship of my university. Why I'd choose anyone but Boris is beyond me.

Anyway, I argued with him a little bit, then went to lunch.

I had the exact same thing happen to me in my first year here - of course, I was young and naive enough to be tricked into buying the damn booklets. Now, after more than three years here, I've learned to recognise that sort of people from afar and to keep my distance. If I had to cave in every time one of them got hold of me, I wouldn't have much money left for charity in the end.

At the Onion Burger next to the MGM Grand in Vegas there is a slew of big boxer/former boxer/islam/black leather wearing guys who try to sell books to people about success, and staying in schools, and staying off drugs. These guys are huge, and they totally give you the book to look at for a moment-- just long enough to realize the writing is horrible, the print is half an inch tall and its 22 pages long -- before telling you its $15. It's a total intimidation racket. and it's being done at Onion Burger of all places.

okay so what exactly is the discussion here? for everyone to relay their awkward experiences with a minority?

grow up, be a man, and stop whining every time someone makes you pee your pants.
