Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
Alright, as you know, I'll be having my first kid here...
Well, after much butt-kissing to my wife, I was able to convince her of going for a medieval theme for the kids room. She was set on a zoo theme, but I was able to explain all of the variety in storytelling, history, fantasy, and colors of time period.
So anyway, I want to paint the room with images and paraphenilia of the period. So, I thought I would ask you fine folks for some help in idea generation.
Keep in mind, the goal here is to have a nursery that is not too babyish in that the kid will want the theme for at least a few years as a child. Also keep in mind this is a newborn: No blood and guts, scary dark orcs, axes chopping off heads, etc. I am even going to minimize exposure to weaponry by keeping swords sheathed.
Finally, I am open to fantasy and historical ideas. So far I have dragons, knights, horses, castles, maps of europe/england, a king and queen, maybe throw in some fairy tale characters like rapunzel, etc.
I have no idea if its a boy or a girl. Thats still seven weeks away before we find out.
If its a girl then the wife demands the zoo theme... Oh well. It's a compromise.
EDIT: If you guys want to post some pictures, drawing, etc, I would be much obliged....
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
The Nice Thing about Medieval is that its fairly neutral to gender. I'd go with an Arthurianesque setup, not too "la-di-da Fairies" and not too dark either. Good Mixture of Dragons, Knights, Castles, some magic, etc. It would really capture your child's imagination I think, mystical and for children a little awe-inspiring.

One of these iron maidens would be awesome, kids need to be disciplined from time to time.
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
Wakizashi is right on. Finding something appropriate for both genders would be ideal. Of course, you could also wait a few weeks, and actually know what sort of kid you're having. Might make decoration quite a bit easier.

:inquisitive: You want a themed room for your kids?
Must be a parenthood thing.
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
I always thought Catapults were cool when I was a kid. I even had that boardgame, Siege, and that was totally sweet.
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
George and the Dragon - there's a nice painting somewhere you should copy (though, i think there is a sword unsheathed in it - no blood though).
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
Compromise go for a zoo theme medieval (and other) of mythical animals... Unicorns, medieval style dragons and lions (the way they paint them had a certain style)... princesses and knights and heraldry are all good.
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
Not the heraldry from my family... would be a little too brutal for a kids themed room (but cool nonetheless) A Severed Fist Surrounded by 3 Castles and 3 Chevrons.

Sure. This isn't so odd. What's the alternative? Blank walls or just about anything you could imagine.
There are many advantages to having a themed room:
(1) Stimulate the Imagination. This is paramount. Bright colors, unusual shapes, and wild concepts are all important factors in pychological and social development.
(2) Provide a Value System. Of ourse we will be implementing religion as well, but fairy tale values are very easy for kids to grasp. Chivalry, kindness, generousity, selflessness- the theme is filled with examples. Hopefully, it will influence my child in a positive way.
(3) Keep me from going totally insane. Yep. It.s partially selfishness on my part (ironic?). I don't want to be surrounded by freakin giraffes and panda bears. At least it's something I like. With a medieval theme, I can more easily go with the medieval fairy tales for bedtime stories and kids movies.

Not a bad idea. A may just do that.

True. I could go with a "princess" theme, But then my wife always saw herself as a princess (even her name translates to princess), and the result is that she is selfish, arrogant, and elitist. These aren't qualities I want in my child should I have a daughter. I wouldn't want these in a son either...
I do agree that waiting is a good idea. I just want the ideas now so that I can start painting as soon as I get the news. I am somewhat of an artist, albeit a crappy amateur artist, and I plan on painting the walls with this theme. Kind of a mural, I guess. With cartoon dragons and cheesey castles, heh.
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
yeah, values system, you could get one of those Orthodox icons with St.George and the dragon, dual usage.
can't go wrong with nice suits of shiny armour and hossies.
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
Don't forget the dead piled up, covered in oozing, pus-ridden sores.
Will help explain where nursery rhymes come from!

One word: trebuchets.
And it would come in handy later - easy way to get them out of bed! :help:

She must be quite a catch. ~;)
edit: how about a medieval zoo? OK I know they didn't exist, but how about medieval town/village populated with zoo animals?

Ehm... adding the clues together... does anybody else get the feeling she's already secretly been to ultrasound check and has already found out it's going to be a girl?
Anyway I vote for an unthemed room with white-painted walls, roof and floor and very little furniture. That'll make the kid bored beyond imagination in the room so he/she will pick up books and read early, and/or stay outside much and get incredibly healthy :2thumbsup:
Re: Medieval Kids Room theme: Help me with ideas!
Divinus , for a medieval animal theme why not try Disneys Robin Hood or something similar .
Or vary it for your own taste and artistic abitily .
