Your internet connection
Extensive poll about internet connections. Post the type of your connection(DSL, cable, optical cable etc.), the capacity you`re supposed to have; and perhaps what you actually get.
Yesterday I installed a 3 Mbps connection on my computer. Since I earlier used a 56K connection, my connection is now theoretically 53 times faster than it was on Sunday. :2thumbsup:
When I tested earlier today, I managed 2,8Mbps. Right now I managed 2721 kbit/s.
Edit: Vote for your download speed(s), not your upload speed as well.
Second edit: Any mod feel free to change option 5 to: 3-5,9 Mbps.

Re: Your internet connection
256 kbit/s, cable. I get what is specified, 30 kb/sec download.
-
Re: Your internet connection
Around 12 Mbps. Usually 600 Kb/s when I'm downloading a file, but it goes up to 10 MB/s sometimes downloading from microsoft or someone with a fast site.
This is using wireless, I don't know if my ethernet is faster, I don't use it much.
-
Re: Your internet connection
3 meg cable here. Its nice and fast! :)
-
Re: Your internet connection
10 Mbps, I get 1 meg download from a really good unloaded server. 400k on average.
-
Re: Your internet connection
According to DSL Reports I just scored a 868kbps. That's a bit lower than my normal that comes in around 1Mbps usually.
I used to have a cable company that gave me 3Mbps+, but I've since moved out of their coverage area and have DSL now. :embarassed:
-
Re: Your internet connection
rough test:
120.4 KByte/Sek (=963 kbps)
15.6 KByte/Sek (=125 kbps)
I pay for 128 Kbyte, wanted to up to 256Kbyte but my Carrier has some problems I haven't dealt with yet.
It's sufficient for surfing. Could be faster.
-
Re: Your internet connection
Theorectically I should be able to reach around 5Mbit/s, but I've never seen something download faster than 600kb
-
Re: Your internet connection
as a rule of thumb you generaly devide your connection speed by 8 to get your max transfer rate...
56k modem connectz to internet at 33kbps
33/8 = 4.125Kb's avarage download speed
modem connects to internet at 576kbps/8 = 72kb's avarage download speed.
personally im on 1mb adsl.
so i avarage 144kb's downloads.
but that dosent mean it dosent sometimes go to 200+

Re: Your internet connection
With Xiahou's test I got the following :
-----------------------------------------------------------
dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-03-15 10:04:48 EST:
493 / 271
Your download speed : 493 kbps or 61.6 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 271 kbps or 33.9 KB/sec.
-----------------------------------------------------------
have no idea if this is good or not...well is it ?
Note: don't know if it's important, but it's a wireless internet connection...
:balloon2:

It`s good if it`s close to the connection you`ve oredered.
Generally speaking, it`s in the low end of broadband connections.
Not sure what you mean by wireless, but it shouldn`t do any difference.

Re: Your internet connection
I have DSL and am supposed to have 1.5 mbps, but I dont know the exact number, but it works very well when playing Multiplayer.

That's actually pretty good. You're in browser download speed is actually measured in KBps, capital B, meaning kilo-bytes per second. When you're talking about network speeds, it's usually in bits per second, not bytes. It's can be confusing but as a rule, when you're talking about file sizes it's in bytes and when you're talking about network speed it's bits.
As someone said, there's 8bits in a byte so: 600KBps * 8 = 4800Kbps or 4.8 Mbps.

Re: Your internet connection
Several Mbps, but the computer I'm currently using slows it down a bit (The CPU is <200 MGhz). Better than dialup, though.

Re: Your internet connection
I used to have dial-up that connected to around 40 KBPS IF I was lucky, but I upgraded to high speed during the past week that connects at 100MBPS.

Uesugi Kenshin Do you wish for me to upgrade your internet connection.
From 56k to ...
A WET PIECE OF STRING!!:2thumbsup:

Re: Your internet connection
Don't tease me about the net connection. You can get nothing else when you live this far out, and it is not even my decision. I live with my parents.
If this is a bit harsh, well I'm a bit frustrated tonight so just take that into account.

Just what it says. His house or the phone poll outside his house is a hotspot. And you can access a wireless lan that way. And wireless connections are much slower than a wired one. Though the ones a wireless company or a city might install are probably better than the 54 or 108 Mbps that we can buy at a store.

A WET PIECE OF STRING!!
Reminds me of the internal office gag we had at the ISP I work at, we do wireless 3G internet (up to 500kbit/s but with high latency) & last year launched a VoIP phone service, teething problems + ongoing network instability resulted in a cup & string labelled "VoIP MK II" going round the office for a while...
At home I have 2mb ADSL.
We recently switched from the natural monopoly provider to a wholesaler with higher data allowance at same price, got consistently 1.8mb in testing before but seem to be getting a generally lower & quite variable speed with the new ISP :(
Its probably due to ongoing shenanigans regarding the wholesaleing by said natural monopoly who doesn't really want to wholesale but is doing it to try to prevent government regulations & they are hopefully going to get this fixed by regulation sometime this year.

Re: Your internet connection
well i hope you have at lest ran tcpoptimizer " http://www.speedguide.net/files/TCPOptimizer.exe" on your 56k.
And i am not suprized by a harsh responce :)
Im prety sure i reacted much worse when i had 56k. and people comented on it.
Still I think the Wet piece of string could be a good upgrade choice :2thumbsup:
:) you know im J/K about the wet piece of string :)
would only give you about 1kb's better preformance than the 56k.
:D

Re: Your internet connection
My connection is being evil. For the past week my LINK light has been blinking, something that usually means I won't be able to go online, but now it just means I get to travel slowly on the internet...slowly.

Yeah I know you're joking, and that reply seemed harsher last night.... Ah well once I'm out of the house I'll have a much better connection.

Re: Your internet connection
Using a shared T3 Connection...I generally get around 20mbps

This thread is depressing me, and you're the first one to quote.
Here in australia, telstra (the half govt. owned telco (though that's planned to change)) artifically limited adsl1 to 1.5mb/s (rather than 8) and charges astronomically for its cable plans.
The only headway that has been made in the market is from independant isps who have installed adsl2 and adsl2+ connections in certain exchanges, which can go up to 24mb/s.
The average person has dial up or adsl1, which is depressingly slow. I consider 512kbs to be 'good' :laugh4: Sigh.

Well, two persons in this thread has a more than 100 Mbps. :dizzy2:
My cousin lives in an apartment connected to the university where he studies and got 100 Mps over optical cable. Optical cable is being installed on the island where I lives as well, such that 20 Mb/s is avaible. Faster than that only a few servers on the net will be able to deliver to you at such speeds, I`m afraid. The Org is a good example for such servers, unfortunately. ~:)

Re: Your internet connection
.
ADSL 256K but it scarcely hits above 200K (judging from the average download speed).
