This has nothing to do with EB but...

Since i'm banned from the .com i thought i'd say it here...

I acquired MTW a couple of days ago and i have to say that, once you look past the bad battle graphics... It's better than RTW was! RTW's AI is so terrible compared to MTW, how did CA manage to make the AI worse than their previous game? I almost lost a battle yesterday in MTW to an army which was a lot smaller in number and also inferior as they had only peasants and archers, i had spearmen and archers... In RTW that wouldn't happen... The game is so much more challanging, even more challenging than the EB mod is!

I just lost over a quarter of my huge army just now conquering Wales! All they had was 2 longbowmen units and 1 spearman unit, it was those longbowmen which they deployed on a hill! They were devastating... :no:

I like the risk style campaign map also, it's not as good as RTW's campaign map obviously but it doesn't look bad at all... But it's difficult sometimes to keep track of all your provinces when there is no list but it's no really big deal... It's a really good game... I can't say it's better than RTW yet for sure but at first glance it is superior in a lot of ways, i'm still learning how to play it completely yet.

Oh boy, once you get more and more into it, you'll find more and more to love. It's superb. Truly wonderful game. Try the XL mod at some point, or one of the other main ones. They don't stray far from vanilla, but they're a great addition. There's also a kick-ass hellenic mod around and a bunch of other great stuff to get into in that world. Ought to keep you busy for a good while 'till the 1.5 port.

What's the XL mod? Just wondering if I should reinstall?

Adds more factions, units, and provinces. It's good stuff.

Yeah, MTW has some things that I miss, like upgrading your Family Member's units, cavalry dismounting, and, er, a much improved travel time by sea, as well as re-emerging factions (in certain situations). Crushing rebels and gaining money was nice; it was the only way I made money as the Danes or if I migrated as the Turks...

Just remember that the campaign AI did not have too many options either when it came to invading or defending, as it was RISK-based.

What about BKB's super mod, thats the one I use. Its seems good and its bigger then XL mod. Which ones better?

duh! i always said MTW was the better game.
only EB makes RTW worth while for me. :2thumbsup:

What I love about RTW-EB is that is is a learning experience. Of course it is nice to crush an empire when you feel like it but the learning experience makes RTW-EB superior to every other total war game or mod for me.

you might be right but after playing rome i can't get over the graphics, its like going backwards playing medieval, lets hope that medieval 2 puts the best of both worlds together

And let's hope the EB team ports EB to Medieval II TW! Gosh wouldnt that be something else.

Ya that would be awsome. I heard they both use the same engin so I think it would not be that hard, right? Eather way I think it would be way worth the efort wether it is for the helinistic period or for the midevil, it would be bad ass for both. Though I think you would need to come up with a new name if you went on to the midevil, I think Europa Barbarum would not make as much sence for then.

The same question was asked in this topic. The answer basically is that each has its own strong points, and both are very good.

I actually had no problem looking past the bad graphics... For me graphics do not make a game, provided they aren't absolutely terrible, MTW is a great game full of great ideas... Unfortunately at the time of making it the great graphics we are used to now weren't available to them.

MTW has it's own great graphical feel to it I think. Something about it is... I don't know... comforting. It's just a nice touch the way it's set up. Just about everything about that game feels right, graphics included. The map, portraits, unit cards and whatnot. Once you play for a while, you don't worry about the 'backwards' step from RTW.

you can dismount certain cav units during the setup stage. sounds more spectacular than it is. meh!

as for the graphics, i loved the images of the units in the backgroundof the descriptions. another thing about the graphics is that a lot of it is left open for imagination. the worst thing i found when i moved back is that units are a static block which can't be penetrated by other units in anyway. units mix up in battle in RTW, it's not possible in MTW. another thing is the synchronised marching which is a bit extreme in MTW.

but the music and voiceovers are MUCH better. i love the latin commands of the catholic factions, especially the ones of the archers! :2thumbsup:

Voice overs are good. I thought the Catholic ones are speaking English... Archers sound like they are saying "Stand your intensity, ten a bloody penny!" ...Obviously that makes no sense, but it's what it sounds like.

Yeah, certain cav units and sometimes in specific conditions. Feudal Knights dismounting into Feudal Foot Knights, during seiges only, comes to mind. (Why only during seiges, I'll never know).

I wish there were a similar option in RTW. Unless I'm a defender, I'm not finding much use for my cavalry during seiges. Since most of the family member's bodyguards are cavalry, it'd be nice to be able to get them off their horses and slog it out like real men.

Besides, wasn't it said Alec the Great himself was often climbing ladders with his men during seiges?

its becouse MTW, was a extreamly simple game, as said, it was risk based so that got rid of all the AI problems in the camp map.
there were only a few slight changes and variations and numbers of units, think rock paper scissors, and then look at a civ pull out.
the way seiges were done compared to now is kind of lame, but i do agree, dismounted units would be handy :)
the battlefield AI is just not that good, it stands still as you rip them apart by arrows,and i could win ridiculous battles of a few thousand kills agasint a hundred at the most. the majoiry of a time,
the design of the mouse button was terrible, i really to prefer romes, so you do not have problems.
i loved the game as it came out, same with shogun, just as i do (and its mods) with rome, but no matter what you say, rome was a step in a good direction in terms of giving people more gameplay options, and dragging the series out of the dark ages (so to speak). it was a step that should of been taken and thank god they did.
MTW is a good game, but not amazing. or considerably better than rome, ok rome was dumbed down, but the options gave to us allowed the possibily of these great mods as well, so that balances it out.

But no amount of modding can change the dumb AI, battlefield or campaign map... In the campaign map your allies lay siege to your cities with 1 unit of skirmisher cavalry, then retreat the next turn and then refuse to accept a ceasefire when you reduce them to 1 city. They blockade your port for 1 turn, then unblockade it, even though if they kept on blocking it they could actually hurt your economy. On the battlefield they send one unit at a time to get slaughtered...

But i agree that RTW is better in terms of controls, like the way you control an army on the battlefield... In MTW controlling a large army on the battlefield is frustrating... :furious3: But in most respects MTW is superior to RTW (But not superior to EB) And i hope they make MTW2 as good as MTW1 is, and actually spend some time on AI rather than shiney bright graphics that hurt your eyes, like they do in vanilla RTW.
