Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
I think it is Management. I can get decent generals with plenty of influence, but none of them have anything better than 3 management. I think I should probably build more of those academy things. Will that give him better traits? Or retinues?
What do you think it is?
Oh and also, could someone list for me all the effects of each attribute? I don't know what effect Command (apart from it makes him a better general), Management (" " " " " " " Governer) and Loyalty (" " " " " less likely to defect) have.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Management is allot easier to get than influence. Influence is primarily dependant upon enslavement and teh slave ancilliaries. Management come in bunchs. You really don't need MORE academies. I only have on eor maybe two academies. What you want to do is put most of your young sons wher ethe academy is and let them sit their for a couple turns. The more governors at ann academy, th ebetter more ancilliaries you will pick up. This allows you to move them arround and create a Gov perfect for the task and then ship him out to his destination. At one point at Athens, I had 6-7 governors their. As I picked up ancilliaries, I grouped them as I wanted and shipped them out to govern rich cities.
It is very, very, very easy to get +4 Management if not more, whereas +4 influence from ancilliaries is actually quite difficult.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Probably influence. But if you have good academies and the right temples, they are all pretty easy to get. Of course you also need to focus a lot on development as well.
Loyalty is not something Ive really studied in BI, though.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
I´d say management is among the hardest to gat and keep, especially when you´re virtually swimming in money. There´s a lot of vices that counter management, less so for influence, I think. Command is the easiest to get and keep, at least in RTW - I don´t know about BI, but rumor has it getting command stars there is a lot harder.
As for the effects, command stars give you boni in battle, mainly morale, I think, but maybe attack and defense as well. Management increases your cities´ income, Influence increases happiness.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Loyalty in BI, because you can only gain it by having some rare traits or gaining a title. One title maximum per character.
In EB, it would be command by far. Sitting at Athens, one of my characters quickly rocketed up to 10 management and 10 influence. I've yet to get past 5 command with my faction leader, though.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
I second to "The Wise" Tiberius.
In fact, loyalty decreases as "time goes by".

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Yeah, I play EB and my greatest general, after winning some 15 times, of which 4 are heroic victories (against larger armies) and no loses, he is still a three star.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
I voted management.
Command stars are earned easily in RTW V1.5 when you fight often and at bad odds.
Influence seems to occur for successful generals. Not sure if its winning battles, eliminating factions, retinue, traits. But my best generals seem to have good influence.
Management can go up well for those governors in cities with acadamy buildings. I give those buildings a low priorority..and have built only one in my campaign so far. The governor there though has already got three management type in his retinue.
So I suppose the campaign game style you follow will influence your choice. If you expand rapidly and fight a lot then star and influence are earned? If you 'turtle' and stay holed up in your cities with acadamies then management will be easy?

Loyality - without a doubt. Influence can be pretty hard too.

Influence is a walk in the park for vanilla RTW, bit harder in BI. Which buildings are best to acquire loyalty?

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Management. I just never had a general with +3 scrolls.. (Maybe some Roman ones.. Can't be sure)

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Management is easy to get. Never have more than 50K (or 100k max) and crank the taxes up to high or highest.

Their is also a retinue member who boosts loyalty as well. Some sort of Imperial bodyguard guy.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Command is so easy to get in RTW. Recruit Mercs, build law or war temples, win a couple of battles, etc Really good generals get swordbearers, bodyguards and eunuchs.
Nothing beats good city management and academies for acquiring management scrolls.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
A few of my current leaders.

I am fighting on all fronts and expanding quickly. So many are new 'man of the hour' types and most earn command stars before anything else. Only 'Meryre' is a governor of a city with an acadamy and he has 3 management which is my highest. He will go a lot higher with time..unless I give his retinue to other leaders.

I want to post a pic like that because I have better generals than that! How do I open the "overviews" scroll?
While I'm on the topic, in the space of 1 turn I got two "men of the hour." It was amazing! The first one I was surprised at because all he did was beat a unit of chosen swordsmen with 2 legionary cohorts and 2 legionary cavalry, but the second one fought against about 3-4 thousand Spanish troops with only 500 men!!! I ended up routing all the enemy troops and killing 1100 enemy spanish! I only had 200 men left by the end of the battle. Both of them are excellent generals now both with plenty of command stars.

Re: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
Management is by far the hardest thing to get. I can't get management, even with Academies and Scriptoriums!!!
Influence is very easy to get.

Yes! I agree totally. The most I can ever get is 4 or 5 management, even with a scriptorium.

AW: Most difficult to acquire attribute for a general?
In EB it is really tough to get a 4-5 stars general. I had the impression that it was easier to get good influence & management, esp. if a govenour sits around 4 longer in a city....But as Radiohead says: I might be wrong

Right click the tab 'ARMY' (above the unit cards). Once the 'overviews' scroll is open you can sort it by clicking on any of the column headings. Cannot sort it by attribute though.
