WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
If you purchase MTW/VI Gold Edition you get version 2.0, and the official version 2.01 patch doesn't work with it. The v2.01 patch contains very important improvements to the game which you won't be able to get, and you won't be able to play multiplayer games with anyone who is using v2.01.
-
Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
See a similar thread in the FixerUpper forum.
I have been going through considerable grief to patch up MTW/VI Gold Edition (misplaced my MTW disks, thus easiest for me was to go buy the Gold Edition, so I thought). It is not possible to patch MTW/VI version 2.01 onto Gold Edition. Gold Edition is a single set release (3 disks), so MTW/VI patch 2.01 will not recognize it.
I finally could patch up using secret sauce which contains among other ingredient liver of a fly, head of a crab and ears of lobsters. Oh, and some incantation which I can't recite here, for fear Creative Assembly staff may turn into ugly creatures if they ever read this. And BTW, throwing a lot of curses at their current distributor may help too.
Annie
ps.: only to say that patching could be done but I can't tell about it. Better would be to pressure CA to release a Gold Specific v2.01 patch.
ps2.: a lot of newcomers bought M:TW Gold because they heard the buzz about M2:TW and want to try out. Hope they won't be disappointed.

What version is your MTW/VI game showing? Did you apply the v2.01 patch from the official site?
-
Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
yup.. installed 1.1 first,then 2.01..

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
as far as i know MTW wont allow retrograde installs of patches,
the official patch should chuck a wobbly about trying to do that
are you sure it was MTW gold edition and not MTW battle pack?
i am sure i know a way to patch Gold 2.0 to 2.01 without any hassles,
but i need someone who definately HAS GOLD EDITION to test it,
you need to try VI_201_Patch.zip
which can be had from the Mizu server (for members),
or from the 3D server for guests
http://www.3ddownloads.com/totalwar/MTW/patches
this patch contains all the files that changed, not much to it really,
backup your original executable and copy this set in the medieval folder.

The Gold Edition doesn't install v1.1. You installed the Battle Pack.

I don't think that works because when you start the game it's going to ask you to put the VI CD in the drive.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
yar,
when the VI 201 executable goes to check the CD it does not find what it is looking for,
there are two ways around that little glitch,
first solution we can't talk about, it's against the forum rules,
check the forum rules using this link,
(that is a big hint)
the second way is also against the forum rules,
and you could email me only if the previously NOT mentioned method does not work.
there will be a time delay to get the second method working,
so please try the first method (that we cannot talk about on this forum) first
cheers,
B.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
I was hoping the third disk in my Gold Edition pack labeled "Viking Invasion" would be what was needed, but no dice. I duped my MTWVI install, ran 201, tried it and no dice. I then spent some time looking around the net for ways to get around the problem but found nothing I'd trust.
One of my biggest peeves with a game is not having the latest patch. It might not be a huge issue patched, but in the back of my mind I can't get over the thought that something is borked and I need it unborked to get the full experience. I'm also hot to try mods but some won't even work without 2.01 patched in.

Version 2.0 is definitely borked. There are 2 officially acknowledged, major bugs in v2.0. They are the "all kings die at 56 years of age" and "the infinite charge". The first one severly affects the SP campaign. It's doubtful you can complete a campaign because you're very likely to run out of heirs. The second one severley affects MP because it allows an exploit with cavalry that allows cav to kill any enemy unit instantly. These are both problems in addition to the facts that there are no mods for v2.0 and you can't play MP with anyone who has the final officially released version. In addition to these problems there are other gameplay improvements in v2.01.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
I am still waiting for copies of a set of minor official files from the DVD which would allow me to create a patch to 2.01 that cannot be "pirated",
(the patch i could create would require the DVD to be in the drive before it would install)
i am now going to assume such assitance will not be forthcoming
i cannot condone piracy on a series of games as well developed as easily (and cheaply) available as TW.
I am going to aquire a copy of TW:Era's
(i want an official CD of Alexander, not a downloaded copy)
I am hoping the version of VI on those CD's IS 2.01
nevertheless for all those having trouble with Gold DVD edition please PM or email me and I will assist in pointing you in reliable directions for solving those problems,
(there is more than one way to skin a rabbit)
BE PATIENT - i have a real life that is always chaotic,
i will answer to email addreses (so if you PM me please remember to include an email address i can write to)
cheers,
B.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
Is there any ‘new’ news concerning the 2.0 version fix?
Thought I’d reprint this from the STW forum, as it also applies to this situation.

Selling software that has online multiplayer feature, and then not supporting it with a server, is a dishonourable business practice.
It is like lying on your job application, then after you get hired (game purchase), admitting to your employer that some of the things on your resume may not prove-out to be as stated.
I was hoping that SEGA (with deeper pockets) might pick up this dropped ball, and restore integrity to the Total War product line.
But then again, who cares if you rip off a few people, as long as your bottom line remains fat?

And I will take it a step further;
As a mater of fact, it should be illegal.
And probably is!
If there is any advertisement that touts online multiplayer, I know it is…

Not yet, but the two week deadline is approaching. Then we will find out if it will be fixed or not.
BTW, you can play online with MTW Gold. It's just that you can't play with anyone who has MTW/VI v2.01 because MTW Gold installs version 2.0 of the game. The v2.01 patch doesn't work because it looks for the VI CD which you don't get with MTW Gold. Also, I've seen one report by a player who says his kings live beyond age 56 which is strange because v2.0 had the 'all kings die at 56' problem. So, it's not clear just what version MTW Gold installs, although, it indicates that v2.0 is installed.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
i have ordered a copy of MTW Gold DVD from the UK,
it will take a little more than a week to get here,
then i can have a good look and see what the problem is,
hopefully The Shogun will have some good news before then,
otherwise i am just going to have to knuckle down and try to devise a reliable and legal workaround that we can upload and point people at.
i have some ideas (like making the patch check the DVD for certain files and refuse to install if those files are not found), but we will see what can be done.
in the meantime there is more than one way to skin a rabbit,
think outside the box!
various
CD/DVD ARTICLES, CD-R "medieval total war"
archives can help
cheers,
B.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
Wow! They simply posted up the main exe for v2.01. Well, I'm very happy this problem has been addressed. I'm confused about which logistical channel was the one which was effective: post in support forum at .com, email to CA, email to Sega, email to Mastertronic, petition at org or warning posts in several forums. The petition is what got the official response.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
Hi The Badger,
Don't worry, it is now possible to upgrade your version to 2.01. You can download the patch for it here. I hope this helps you, good luck, cheers!
-
Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
Here is the link to the official support site for MTW and some
explanation copied from the site.
If you have the Gold Edition of MTW-VI it is v2.0 and needs to be updated
to v2.01 as explained below.
If you have MTW-VI from the TW Eras package then it is already patched to
v2.01 and you don't need any patches for the game. So, I went out and bought the complete and boxed TW Eras package on Ebay for $27 including shipping, cheap. I will now dispose of my earlier copies of both MTW and VI, and I never bought the Gold Version luckily, just patched-up the early version. What a bunch of confusion to publish games like this. Chris
Here is the link: http://www.totalwar.com/
MEDIEVAL: TOTAL WARTM GOLD EDITION PATCH
The exe file that comes with the Sega Medieval Gold edition is version
2.0. This patch will update it to version 2.01. This isn't necessary for
those of you who have purchased the Eras pack as this already comes
patched to 2.01.
Instructions:
The installation of this file must be done manually as follows.
Download the file and replace your current executable with this one. It's
probably best if you retain a backup of your old one. By default, the
destination folder Medieval Gold installs to is "C:Program Files The
Creative AssemblyMedieval - Total War - Gold Edition".
Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Download the patch
here.
MEDIEVAL: TOTAL WARTM PATCH
Download Medieval: Total War US/Euro Patch V1.1 (8.8MB).
General Fixes
Fixed a bug where cavalry would receive a charge bonus ad infinitum under
certain circumstances. Removed a command line cheat that would unlock the
camera giving an unfair advantage on the battlefield.
Single player Fixes
Reinforcements in campaign battles now appear in the order selected in
the pre-battle screen. Kings will no longer die of old age at exactly 56
years.

That's because it's not a patch, so you are not supposed to run it. All you do is take the MedievalTW.exe that you download and copy it over your existing MedievalTW.exe file in your main game folder. BTW, the BUGSLAYERUTIL.DLL file is supposed to be there in your main game folder.

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
thanks Puz, but if someone could explain me how to do that i would be realy gratefull, as i am a noob at this kind of thing:thumbsup:

Re: WARNING about MTW/VI Gold Edition
Take the file that's downloaded and copy it into your main game folder, where all your game files are. The path is different in Gold Edition than it is with the other releases--I was just working with someone on it this weekend. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact path.
When you do this, it will ask you if you want to replace the existing file. Click Yes.
Then, just run the game like you always do. When it gets to the main menu, look in the upper left corner. It should say 2.01. If so, you have successfully patched. If not, something didn't happen the way it was supposed to.
If you have problems and you have Instant Messaging, my MSN addy is in my profile here. As you are Aggony, I would be happy to assist. Your clan m8s assisted me a lot in the past as I learned TW MP.
