Empires of the Atlantic World
I was reading a review of this book, and found this book, thought provoking.

Written by John Elliot it provides a what-if.
What if a Tudor king had supported Christopher Columbus, who promptly discovered the New World. Britain exploits this, and takes in gold, silver, etc. The Spanish settle New England. This would not cause any English Civil War, and would not result in the American Revolution.
I was wondering if any have read this book, and what are your thoughts on it?
Re: Empires of the Atlantic World
Well, I hate to fly in all uninformed (not read the book :laugh4: ) but I don't believe there would have been no American War of Independence just because there was a different colonial power. After all, where are Spain's American dependencies today? All independent. I think European colonialism of the day couldn't have survived with such rich colonies a long way from the power centre. I think there would have just been different wars of independence, rather than none at all.
About the ECW, hmm, not so sure - I'm not aware of the colonial aspects of that, so I'll sit back, watch the thread and wait to be educated!
Re: Empires of the Atlantic World
Yes, I don't think different colonies would have affected the other aspects of the ECW. King Charles I would still have been King, and may well have decided to do away with that pestering Parliament and reform the Church of Scotland into a more English one (the ECW was one of three civil wars cause by King Charles, the others were the War of the Covenant and the Irish one, collectively known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, methinks).
