Photoshop Woes
I was looking into doing a little modding for myself just to see what I could do, and everybody keeps mentioning the use of photoshop, which I don't have. So I looked at adobe's website for the newest photoshop product, and they want $650 bucks! O.o Sorry but I just don't have that kind of cash to dole out on something like this. Maybe I'm not looking at the right version of photoshop, or maybe there's a MUCH cheaper photo editting tool I can use. Any knowledgeable opinion would be appreciated.

Re: Photoshop Woes
search for GIMP on google... it is completely free and is probably just as good as photoshop
then search for the dds plug in after that so you can edit the textures as well

Re: Photoshop Woes
Gimp is..interesting, thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it works out.

Re: Photoshop Woes
There is also a 30 day trial for Photoshop you can download.

Re: Photoshop Woes
I'm using Photoshop Elements 2.0 - which seems to be baby (about $90)version of Photoshop (ours came free with scanner or camera or something)
there's a free trial download of v4.0 here
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/
it seems quite good and handles .dds plugin fine. You can ammend alpha in it but only by loading, amending and saving selection - I can't get it to view as a separate channel as shown in the skinning tutorial for full Photoshop.

Re: Photoshop Woes
When I first saw this thread I thought it was the name of the new version of PS...
Dol Guldur (a PaintShop Pro user) ;)

Re: Photoshop Woes
lol, no, not a new version.
But the Gimp 2.0 seems to be working nicely so far (I've used it for map modding so far..no skinning yet..but it's easy to use and very efficient). So thanks giantmonkeyman for that bit of info.
I may try the trial download for photoshop later too, just to see which I prefer.

Re: Photoshop Woes
You're right, I can't find Photoshop Woes for Windows anywhere. ;)
GIMP is good for a free piece of software - it even does some things the pay-for ones don't.

Re: Photoshop Woes
Also, there is not a lot of point in learning to use a tool you will be saying goodbye to in 30 days!
If you get on OK with GIMP, then stick with it. It will do all the things you need it to do :D

Re: Photoshop Woes
Yeah I'm rather enjoying it actually.. I've been working on a map project, trying to use real world terrain landmasses (albeit altered/copy-pasted and just downright distorted) to create a fantasy landscape based on a homegrown rpg I created.

Re: Photoshop Woes
I went on Ebay to find Photoshop 7.0 for £20, ($17 ish....), only cuse i need image reader and have no idea how to get it otherwise though.
I'm not exactly sure how an RPG would work on RTW, but good lukc anyways
