Anybody Know how to get units to fall back fighting?

H'mm I am getting a bit frustrated. During some battles I would like to have a unit continue fighting, but move backwards. I have tried various different things including Alt clicking behind the unit. Everytime the unit stops fighting and turns around giving (showing their backs to the enemy) marches to the mark and then turns to the original facing.

Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong?

You are doing nothing wrong. It just isn't possible.
Hopefully it will be in MTW2

If you want them pushed back use guard mode, not a guarantee but the weaker they are to the attacker the more they will be pushed back while not taking many losses
