I'm having a prob with my PC. :wall:
One day out of the blue it started doing this.

I hadn't started any programs or even connected to the net. Just booted up and it happened.
Any ideas what the problem is?
The most likely problem is that your graphics card has passed its best before date and is no longer fit for human consumption.
In normal speak, your graphics card is now worthless.
I advise a monitor check. Pins at the end of the cable may be damaged -but may be repaired if you're lucky enough.
I doubt it's the monitor, since a printscreen image would show up as normal when displayed on another computer. My guess is that the video card is on it's last legs. I don't know the exact mechanism of the printscreen capability, if it's saving the image from the vid-card memory then it's time for a new card.
I assumed you rebooted multiple times to see if the problem corrected itself?
I once had a defective Radeon 9700 that displayed a similar picture. Not sure what caused the problem though. I do recall reading online that people who experienced similar graphic artifacting said it was due to overheating. Anyway since it was brand new I RMA'ed it immediately and got a new one.
Your problem might be related to overheating or possibly a bad component or memory chip. If your 3D card is still under warranty or the store/reseller RMA policy is still applicable then take immediate action to get it replaced. If it is no longer under warranty or the like then check to see if the card is seated properly in the AGP or PCI-ex slot. Also check to see if the fan is spinning properly and isn't clogged with dust and particles. If it is then clean it out thoroughly with high pressure air or a soft brush. If this doesn't do jack and you're feeling adventurous consider removing the heatsink/fan, cleaning off the old thermal paste or pad from the chip & heatsink/fan and applying quality thermal paste like Artic Silver.

Ok..
- Nortons didn't find a virus.
- Scan disk didn't fix it but appeared to disabled mouse after running.
- I've checked the cables and they seem ok.
- I've unplugged and replugged the monitor
- I've reset monitor to default settings
- I can't check the monitor on another PC, or vice versa. Have only one of each
- I get ghosting when moving menus

You should check whether or not you have a PCI-express slot, I think you should be able to see this in your Bios, not sure if you can check it in "hardware profiels" (translated from dutch), I *think* you probably don't have one, since I assume the 9800pro is an AGP card.
If you have an AGP only compatible board and wont to stick with ATI have a look at the Radeon X800, X500 and R9550 ranges of cards as starting point. For PCIXpress graphic cards you'll have to upgrade the Motherboard and possibly several other components as well.Quote:

Looks like the memory on your graphics card has had it. This can be caused by it running too hot. Try actually underclocking the card to see if that removes/reduces the problem, if not then the memory is probably damaged permanently. Were you running the card overclocked?
With faulty memory, applications and games with often run ok and the card will often pass any Direct X or other tests. The problem can be strictly visual.

I have a dell 8400 and it was the first of it's kind to have a pci express motherboard (they stuck the crappy x300 se in it which i later upgraded to am x800xt). If you don't want to buy a new comp, which I'd recommend saying as yours is quite dated, I'd go with an x800 xt 256 mb agp.

Yer, appears my GPU is stuffed. I've since learn't that evidently it was a common problem with the Dell Dimensions 8300. A mixture of a crappy / surging / underpowered 250 W PSU, a below standard version of the Radeon 9800 pro video card and the structure of the motherboard with the hot Audigy sound card placed next to the video card.
I'm going to have to get a new PC me thinks. :shame:
Tarrak ... erhh Kraxis had the same problem some time ago, dunno if he resolved it yet, I think he has, you can ask him.
Anyway the only solution given in that thread was this one:

Make sure that the connectors are screwed in tight, and check that the mechanical connection on your monitor or video card is good enough to withstand gravity. Sometimes there are mechanical obstructions that prevent you from screwing it in properly.
