You didn't specify which game your playing but I'm playing RTW and will offer my tip on that:
A tip that really helped me was this map that calculates unrest in cities and which city should be your capital to control it in RTW.
I dont know who made it and wish to thank them whoever they are, but its saved as one of my favourites.

hey bedlam28 thanksalot for the link its been really usefull so far im playing rome total war correct guess currently playing as julii waow what a game i manage to take carthage with only 1 unit of archers + one unit of cavalry i dont know if anyone knows this but attacking from behind in charge mode really kicks ass hail to you all and thanks for the warm welcome
