Europa Barbarorum 'Dream Team'

You probably know what the rules of a dream team are.
Apply them to EB and we have a fun discussion. :idea2:
So the basic concept is you have 20 unit slots to make an army and you have no limits as to what you can choose - you can choose units from any factions, with no price limit and any amount of duplicates. For example you could have all your cavalry parthian and all your infantry roman triarii or something crazy like that... Imagine the flanking you could do with that.

So just post some lists of perfect/weird/funny/brutal armies so we can speculate and say "What if...".

As I am severely biased, I shall say..... any army that is Carthaginian. :laugh4: :2thumbsup:

1 general, in Hellenic Kataphract armour, of the best design.
2 units of Repeating Ballistas
3 units of Hellenic Kataphracts.
2 units of Carthaginian African Elites(the Romanized ones)
2 Units of Triarri(chainmail)
2 units of Eastern Heavy archers(the Roman ones)
4 units of mixed elite pikemen(Kleurhoroi,African, and Agrypispides)
4 units of the Persian Royal Archers(The ones with the scalemail, which retain speed, and still are horsearchers)

Yes, the perfect elite army, no elephants to go insane though.

8 of the best Cohorts in the game (Can't remember name off top of head)

Very solid infantry centre and very tough flanks! Also the Cavalry archers are deployed three on both flanks, and loop around, hitting everything in the rear.

1 Helenic General (Macedonian preferably)
1 Heavy cavalry (Hetairoi/helenestic kataphraktoi)
3 Sphendonetai
3 Peltastai
4 Shock infantry (This being either: ethiopiai agemata/Merjoz/thorakitai argyraspidai or gaesatae)
8 units of heavy spearmen (kleruchoi agemata/pezhetairoi/chaeonian guard)

Thats my settup :), i normally play with eastern factions so its also visible in my choise of units and battle tactics :beam:

Pretty much my main army in the war against the Seleukids.

Two hellen generals, with lot's of experience (a three silver, and a two golden chevroned general), about 4 units of seasoned thorakitai, 5 unit's of HA's with each 3 to 6 experience, 2 units of Hippeis Thessalikoi with 3 experience, and the rest mistophoroi pikemen with also 3 experience each.

It probably get's beaten by every other dream team like army, but it's fun to play with because it's a very tactically flexible army, it doesn't rout, and more important: it's possible! You can actually have it in game.

That is, if you just stick to EB and don't start fiddling with the recruitment yourself. Also, since it has beaten 5 stacks of annoying Seleukids (mainly thorakitai units plus pezhetairoi units + generals) in a row...

And when my anti Epeiros campaign is done, I'll be throwing my main army over there in the Eastern game, containing a three golden chevroned general.

1 Libyan spearman
1 Libyan Heavy spearman
2 Sacred Band Cavalry
1 Sacred Band Cavalry general
2 Carthaginian Citizen cavalry
2 Samnite heavy infantry


But in case of a dream team I would sort of adapt it to something like:

7 Kleruchoi Agemata
2 Elite African Infantry
2 Gaesatae
2 Hypaspistai (if they carry spears*)
2 Sacred Band cavalry
1 Hetairoi
1 Hetairoi general
1 light successor cavalry*
2 Gastiz, cause they look cool.

* I havent played with the successors, so I dont know much about them :sweatdrop:

8x Elite African Pikemen (the solid centre of the army)
4x Elite African Infantry (second line, support with javelins and fill gaps)
4x Kataphraktoi (cover flanks, flank enemies)
4x Some Horse Archers (go round enemy rear, wreak havoc)

This is my ideal (realistic) Epeiros army. I played many a custom battle with it and actually tried to craft it in a campaign (harder than you might think):

15 units of those Armenian cataphract archers, which are also nifty with a lance.

Yes, I can't remember the names.

In my Armenian campaign I managed to get:

4 Merc. Kluddolon
3 Merc. Phalangites
4 Superheavy Cataphracts
5 Cataphract Archers
2 Thanvabara
8* general
1 Scythian HAs

All the cavalry were 3 gold chevrons, all the infantry was freshly recruited then disbanded, in order to keep maximum movement.

A whole army of Carthaginian Sacred Bands! In my Carthaginian campaign I always spammed out on them.

Wouldn't stand a chance against elephants and successor state elites. And I suppose the gaesatae and other shock infantry would make short work of them too. ~;)

3 Lucae Epos and 1 "Mercenary Horse Archers" in advance to skirmish and slow down the foe and retiring to the farther flank to chase down routers.
1 Geastatea, 1 Solduri, and 1 Belgae Miltnat, all veterens as a wieghted head to lead the charge.
4 Soratos to soften up the opposition for them.
1 Burgandai Veneti, 1 Mala Galaros, and 3 Botroas to support and follow up the veteren infantry charge.
2 Gallic Generals, 1 Brehitin, 1 "Mercenary Sarmation Nobles" for the cavalry "umpfh!"

Just an EB game play question about "Dream Team" army stacks.

In most TW Series games I've found it pretty easy to recruit faction specific standardized Dream Team army stacks to deploy for my nefarious purposes, but in EB I'm always too stretched by the gameplay to do this and have to adapt my style of warfare to using cheap locals and mercenaries as needed. Has anyone else found this to be the case with EB0.74?

Heh, it is like that because that is EB's intentions. Hell, after playing a short campaign as the Ptolemaioi I understand why they or the Seleukids were never able to truely defeat the other.

Ok, lets change that to the other type of army that I used in my conquests. I spammed out on Sacred Bands when I conquered Italy, but for most other conquests I used:

2 - Iberian Caetratii - To absorb the missiles that the enemy may throw at me while they advance. They also use up their missiles in this skirmish. When their missiles are gone or when the enemy has got to close they retreat behind the lines. If I am losing and I want to retreat I use them as suicide infantry to protect my retreating force.
10 - Elite African Pikeman - To serve in the main front line and to beat any cavalry and successor infantry.
3 - Elite African Infantry - To serve behind the pikemen to fight on should they break-up or start to lose too quickly.
2 - Iberian Assault Infantry - To stand on the flanks, hide in woods, ambush and to flank the enemy from behind.
2 - Sacred Band Cavalry - To serve on the flanks should I be using the Iberian Assault infantry to ambush the enemy. If I am not using the Iberian Assault Infantry they stand at the rear of the army in reserve and to chase down fleeing enemies.

I'm aware that this is EB's intention as I was lucky enough to have been chosen as one of the beta testers for the 0.8 release. It was more a request for feedback from other players to see how effective the 0.74 build was at achieving this desired intention.
