On August the 6th I raced to the recruiting office and I lied about my age. They gave me a letter about my details. It said ‘Private Adamson, training is set for the date of 7th of August. You will be expected on time.’ I went straight home. A little fountain, house’s surrounding it and paved area in the middle as well.That was my town. My house was far down the road. A massive farm, plus a small house. A verandah out front where visitor’s sit and drink coffee with my mother and father. My mother has no job, because it would be rather uncommon, but my father works on our farm. To get our dinner and other’s. I had 3 brothers. Henry, Fred and George. Henry was the oldest and more serious. Fred loved playing jokes and making jokes. Fred and I love stirring up Henry who always gets annoyed. George like’s to help father and loves farm work. Mother likes sitting on the verandah weaving and drinking coffee. She make’s the best shirts for father, who always rips his shirts, but it also gives her something to do. We have no close friend’s around us because there is no one living nearby. I raced down our old dirt road to our house. I jogged up the steps and found mother weaving out front. She looked at me and smiled “I made you a nice new shirt to wear to school!” The look on her face changed quickly “What’s wrong?” she said in an demanding tone. “Nothing Mother, Calm down.” I sweetly said. I raced inside to my brother’s room, I raced into George’s room. He was still out farming. The excitement still going through me, I sprinted to my room, Fred also sleep’s in my room. He was sitting at his desk writing. “Guess what!” I said quietly, He turned around and saw my face, “What?’ he said slowly. “ Guess who’s going to the army!” I said teasingly, “Oh, yeah, I knew about that…” he said sadly, “How?”I wondered, “He said goodbye today!” he said looking at me strangely. “ Who? When?” I said in a panic. “Henry of course! Wait…You don’t know about it! Father and George are saying goodbye!” I panicked. I have to tell mother on the same day Henry leaves. “I’ve joined up, I am going tomorrow to training” I said fast. He jumped up quickly, “You joined up! You didn’t tell me! Wait until Mother hear’s! I’m gonna go join! See ya! Wait till mother hears…” He said quickly. Mother came in, “Wait until I hear what?” she said suspiciously.
I thought something up. I couldn’t think anything up. “Nothing Mother.” Fred zipped over and cut in, “There is something indeed! He joined up in the army! He’s going to training tomorrow!”, If only Fred had kept his mouth closed. “ It is true Mother, I can not deny it!!” I said. She burst into tears and ran to her bedroom and slammed. Father and George came home later on and I told them, Father took and well, “ You are good strong man, you’ll make it. Good on ya!”, I felt greatly encouraged after that. George said nothing and went to his bedroom. I later found out he has also joined up and will go to training in 2 months time, he is jealous of me, getting to go to war so soon. When we were all lying in bed I could hear Mother sobbing. “ He’s too young! They all are!” she sobbed. My Father’s comforting voice barely could be heard, “He is serving his country! He’ll make it!” My Mother screamed out, “ You’re sending them to there death, Gone! I only got seventeen year’s with them! What about the other forty!” I shall never forget that night, It was so, heartbreaking. I started packing my bags the next morning, every now and then Mother would come in and help or stand over me and watch. But she never said anything. Finally I was ready to go. We all went to the train station on the other side of town. As we were walking there hundred’s of other boys were saying good bye to there sobbing Mother’s. A sorry sight.
When we got there Mother was on the Brink of tear’s, I felt great regret leaving her, but I had to go to the glory of war.
