Venice (city) had 167 000 inhabitants in 1563 and whole Republic of St. Mark had 1,7 million.

Venice was ruled by patricians.

In 1570 Venice was in war with Ottoman Empire who demanded Cyprus. Venice lost Cyprus in 1571 but the same year large Christian alliance under Don Juan of Austria annihilated at Lepanto Ottoman fleet.
