The most heroic defence of Baktra

This morning I've played a quiet unique siege battle in my current EB 0.79 baktira campaign. I actually fought to the last man, my general, and won.

A full stack of 3200 Seleucids, mostly Pantodapoi spearmen and Pantodapoi phalangitai assaulted Baktra, defended by 1200 men. I could destroy their siege tower and ram, but two teams with ladders were sufficient to effectly assault the walls. The handful of Pantodapoi which could leave the burning tower was enough to kill all the archers of this units except 32.

All my infantry died fighting on the walls, so that only my 230 cavalrymen remained, and the Seleucids could capture a gate. At this time around 90 percent of their soldiers were already dead. My cav. could destroy their single horse archer unit and the remaining Pantodapoi descending from the walls, but the combined force of a fresh phalanx unit with their captain-general and 80 phalangites from the wall forced me to retreat to the central plaza. In this actions I lost around 130 horsemen. Fortunately the phalangites advanced in two separated columns, so could surround the generals unit and rout it for the cost of another 60 horsemen. My surviving cav. then fought the other Pantodapoi phalangitai unit until only my faction heir stayed alive. The last 41 seleucid phalangites now controlled the plazza and the three minute countdown started and all but one Bactrian soldiers were dead or wounded with man frozen in panic.


However through some manoeuvrering and repeated attempts I could convince the Seleucids to pursue my general and stop the countdown.

I lured them through the street between the temple and the palace to an uncaptured part of the walls were the arrows from one tower, manned by loyal townspeople, decimated and routed the Seleucids and my closest victory was complete.

You know why you won? You had TA leading your forces and he was just whipping them unto the last man! :grin:

Not to mention some cunning tactics on your part. Nice battle and report.

i used this tactics multyple times. kind of cheating though.

Wait, the tactics or using TA?

Justin keeps talking about Eucratides (while besieged in Baktra) taking his 60 horsemen (in our case Hetairoi Kataphraktoi) and pushing through killing Demetrios 2 and routing his 60.000 troops.

So in this case AArt immitates history!

"Fighting to the last man" is usually an exaggeration. But in this case you literally fought to the last TA!

Reminds me of a seige I had on RTW:BI

I was the saxons.. I had just claimed all of Gaul except for some parts to the south which were under seige..

When out from the east came the Vandal Horde!!!

somewhat luckily they were traveling along the mediterranean..

Their damn numbers crushed my small beseiging armys to the south (I had no need to send a real force against the rebel cities I was beseiging..

Anyway.. The vandals took the southern provinces hugging the Mediterranean.. I figured id send a professional army to finish of their vandal armys..

While I was building up this army they simoultaneously (or however you spell it) attacked all of my central provinces!

These were my recruiting cities!!!

Unluckily for the vandals they were my large wall cities :)

My most south city was caught the most unawares.. the barbaric vandals broke through the gates and although my town militia and low quality archers put up quite a fight they failed...

Then came my most northern city..

I was building up my main cavalry force their for the counter attack army..

And my big walls slaughtered their ladders and ram.

It was just a matter of sending out my cavalry on the poor AI army, they were stuffed.

I recalled I lost only 34 men in the main cavalry charge against the vandal army.. Also I had my king leading the cavalry.. And the low qulaity but high number vandal army had their King amoung them..

Amid the confusion of the absolute slaughter that followed for the Vandals their king was knocked off his horse and trampled my his own retreating men.

Vandals: 1
Saxons: 1

As for the 3rd and last central city..

Well the battle was hardly even. Although I had the walls and a handfull of archers the vandal seige ladders made it up to the walls.. their heavy infantry slaughtered my men on the walls.. However while my archers were been slaughterd on the walls my main light infantry saxon units were slaughtering the missle cavalry and archers of the Vandals!

yay!

halfway through the battle my defensive had lost to their offensive while my offensive won to their defensive.

Now it was a matter of sending my men up to the walls to destroy the vandal infantry..

A bloddy battle resulted on the walls.. The body count for the saxons alone counted well above 1000, the vandals around 2000.

But in the end it was up to 1 pumped and ready saxon spearmen against two tired and bloddy vandal swordsmen.. My man took down 1 of them to only be killed by the other.

The vandals one the day by a single man.

I was annoyed.

Very annoyed.

Vandals: 2
Saxons: 1

That is one of many battles ive had fought to the last man..

The aftermath: I hastly recuited an army in my home provinces while the saxons built up theirs in their newly claimed homeland.

I was on the deffensive at this moment.
The vandals sent a force I tallied up to be 3 full armys, half of all their military strength, against my half full border force of spearmen and archers.
Luckily for me it was a bridge battle.
While the approxomite 2000 saxon foot soldiers swam the river my archers cut them down before melee attacking the tired out men. And my spearmen easily repelled the vandal cavalry and newly appointed king. Their king escaped with only 200 men.

It was one of the most bloddiest battles I had fought to this date eccept for a few roman civil wars in good ol vanilla R:TW.

Anyway with the main vandal army in retreat my new saxon cavalry force was ready to cut them down on the plains between the river battle and their closest city.

I managed to cripple their entire army but the large-massive walls of their cities were to big for me to even think of attacking.

So now on that campaign im letting the somewhat powerful romans expell them from souther Gaul while i take mainland britain, waiting to return to expell these foreign invaders of saxon lands.

Woo.. long story, I could go on about my roman civil war battles (those were massive) and my britain assult tactical force team battles but that would take way to long.

PS: my computer coulds barely handle that bridge battle btw! I had to pause every second to make my commands.
